Richardson Hitchins Still Without Next Fight as IBF Decision Pending

By Dan Ambrose - 01/18/2026 - Comments

Richardson Hitchins won the IBF junior welterweight title months ago but still has no defense on the books. His mandatory obligation against Lindolfo Delgado remains frozen after an appeal, and a potential voluntary against Oscar Duarte for February 21 in Las Vegas keeps getting discussed without contracts. The longer this drags, the more it looks like Hitchins has no real interest in defending at 140 pounds.

The IBF ordered Hitchins to defend against Delgado after he won the belt. His team appealed to delay that requirement, giving them space for a voluntary defense first. The IBF approved the pause but has not reissued the order or set a purse bid date. Delgado sits at number one in the rankings with no enforcement mechanism pushing his shot forward. The sanctioning body appears content to wait, but their tolerance has an expiration date.

Eddie Hearn confirmed talks about Hitchins fighting Oscar Duarte on the Barrios-Garcia undercard, but nothing has been finalized. The IBF has not approved the fight as a voluntary defense. Duarte wants the opportunity, yet no paperwork exists. Without signatures, this remains conversation rather than reality.

Welterweight Move Complicates Division

Hitchins stated he does not plan to stay at 140 pounds and intends to move to welterweight. That comment raises obvious questions about whether he defends the title at all. If he vacates, the division opens for other contenders, but he has not announced a timeline. Dalton Smith holds the WBC belt, yet no unification discussions have materialized. Hitchins has also mentioned Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney without producing actual negotiations.

The February date sits four weeks out with no signed opponent. The Delgado mandatory sits unresolved with no pressure from the IBF. Hitchins controls a belt but has not committed to defending it or moving up. This situation resolves only when he chooses a direction or the IBF forces one.
