Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing Opens With Walsh vs Ocampo at UFC Apex This Friday

The launch of Zuffa Boxing arrives Friday night in Las Vegas, with Callum Walsh (15-0 11 KOs) positioned as the public face of Dana White’s long-planned entry into the boxing space. Walsh’s fight with Carlos Ocampo  (38-3 26 KOs)  will headline the promotion’s first card at the UFC Apex, streaming on Paramount+, and is being treated internally as a tone-setter for a monthly series rather than a standalone experiment.

While Walsh has built his career at junior middleweight, recent filings list the bout at a 160-pound middleweight limit. The adjustment does not radically alter the matchup, but it removes any late weight strain and hints at flexibility in how Zuffa intends to deploy Walsh moving forward.

Walsh enters unbeaten and heavily promoted, by design. The 24-year-old Irish southpaw has been on White’s radar for years, and his rise has been built carefully rather than rushed. Trained by Freddie Roach, Walsh fights regularly and comes off a composed points win over Fernando Vargas Jr. last September on the Canelo Crawford undercard. That performance suggested he can manage tempo and pressure over rounds, not simply rely on early power.

Ocampo is brought in to challenge that idea. The Mexican veteran has close to 40 professional fights and more stoppage wins than Walsh has total bouts. His record draws a clear distinction between levels. Title opportunities against Errol Spence Jr., Sebastian Fundora, and Tim Tszyu exposed his ceiling. Since the Tszyu loss, he has reset with knockouts against lesser opposition, enough to keep his confidence intact, though questions remain about how he holds up against sharper, faster fighters.

From Zuffa’s side, the matchmaking is intentional. Walsh is expected to look quicker and more precise, using southpaw angles to manage distance at the higher limit. Ocampo’s assignment is to apply pressure early, test Walsh’s comfort, and see whether the pace can be forced.

Key dynamics to watch

  • Walsh at range: His Roach-trained footwork and disciplined jab are expected to keep him just outside Ocampo’s reach, resetting angles before exchanges can settle.
  • Ocampo moving forward: He tends to load up with wider hooks when pressing, and his chances improve if he can close space consistently and turn exchanges into physical contests rather than quick touches.

Reaction has been mixed. Walsh has visible backing as the chosen standard-bearer, while skeptics question whether Ocampo presents real danger or familiar resistance. The undercard has drawn interest as well, led by Misael Rodriguez against Austin Deanda, alongside other young prospects, reinforcing the promotion’s prospect-heavy direction.

That split likely suits Zuffa. This is less about unanimity and more about proof. A clean Walsh performance gives the promotion a smooth opening. Any struggle changes the conversation immediately. Either way, the spotlight is exactly where they intended it to be.

The Paramount+ exclusive event from UFC Apex in Las Vegas takes place on January 23, with prelims starting at 6:00 p.m. ET (11:00 p.m. UK time) and the main card beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET (2:00 a.m. UK), headlined by Walsh vs. Ocampo as the official launch of Zuffa Boxing’s partnership with Paramount+.
