Conor Benn Says He Plans to Win WBC Welterweight Title in 2026

Conor Benn has gone on record saying 2026 is the year he takes the WBC welterweight strap. He put the word out on social media recently without a date or opponent on the calendar. It is a long reach for a fighter who has stayed away from the 147 pound limit for the last four years. The WBC moved him into the top spot last month regardless. That choice got a lot of people talking about how the rankings actually work. A lot of fans see the influence of his father in the decision.

Benn spent his last night under the lights in London beating Chris Eubank Jr back in November. They fought at middleweight. Benn had the benefit of a rehydration clause in that contract. Eubank was thirty six and looked the part over twelve rounds. Winning that fight kept Benn in the conversation for bigger things. The talk of nepotism follows him because of what his father achieved with that same green belt.

The mechanics of the alphabet rankings

The reality of the situation involves Mario Barrios defending against Ryan Garcia on February 21. Benn wants the winner of that one. He is waiting on the WBC to make it official with a mandatory order. He has mentioned names like Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney to keep his name in the mix. These fights remain hypothetical until someone signs a check.

Benn will find the resistance much higher against natural welterweights who have spent their careers at the limit. His timing will likely fade if he tries to jump straight into a championship pace at 147. A fighter who spends years north of a division usually finds the final few pounds of a cut to be the hardest opponent in the room. He is banking on a ranking that feels more like a legacy gift than an earned position.
