David Benavidez is showing off what still works. That clip he posted, gloves cracking the bag, chin low, is  the sound of a fighter who’s starting to sense how heavy things get when size stops being his edge.

He’s heading for Gilberto Ramirez on May 2. No tune-up. No catchweight. Straight to cruiser. That’s risky. Zurdo doesn’t need to be quicker or younger. He just needs to stay upright. Benavidez took too many flush shots at light heavyweight. Morrell made him blink. Gvozdyk made him think. Yarde made him honest. Those rounds don’t fade. They stack up.

Starting camp five months early looks like discipline on the surface. Fighters do it when they feel the weight of what’s coming.

The combinations aren’t free anymore

Benavidez built his name on output. He plants himself and lets the hands go. Opponents usually crumble before he slows down. That made him dangerous at 168. At 175, it made him hittable. At cruiserweight, it could make him a target.
