Fans on social media remain skeptical that Shakur Stevenson will remain with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom company for his next fight against William Zepeda on July 12th.
Although he has denied the reports by Stevenson (leaving Matchroom, stating he still has a two-fight deal with him and Turki Alalshikh), fans are distrustful of the promoter, believing he’s not forthcoming about the actual situation.
Shakur’s Silence
What’s strange is Shakur’s silence on the subject of his leaving and signing with another promoter, Lou Dubella, for his title defense of his WBC lightweight belt against William Zepeda on the July 12th card in New York. It’s totally unlike Shakur not to comment on rumors about him.
Fans few his silence on this as confirmation that he has left Matchroom, but will still be on Turki’s July 12th card, but with a different promoter. It doesn’t matter to the average person who promotes Stevenson. So, Hearn being swapped out for another promoter by Shakur won’t make a difference.
He still has to defeat the unbeaten Zepeda (33-0, 27 KOs) on this card. The important person here is Turki. He’s the one who can help Stevenson get the Gervonta Davis fight later this year if he’s victorious on July 12th.
Some fans don’t think so, and feel that Hearn is dancing around the subject, hoping to patch things up with the popular fighters Shakur behind the scenes to keep him among his flock at Matchroom.
The Unseen Hand
Hearn’s frequent mention of Turki when speaking about Stevenson suggests to some that he hopes to assist in keeping him on board for the second fight of his two-fight deal.
Some fans view Stevenson as having betrayed Hearn, and feel that he should have stayed with him to complete his two-fight contract instead of abandoning ship after one fight against the electrician Josh Padley.
