WBC interim lightweight champion William Zepeda and Tevin Farmer will meet in a rematch next month on March 29th in Cancun, Mexico. The event will be shown live on DAZN in a Golden Boy-promoted card.
Fan Reaction
Fans on social media aren’t pleased to see Zepeda (32-0, 27 KOs) running it back against the 34-year-old former IBF super featherweight champion Farmer (33-7-1, 8 KOs) because he already beat him by a 10-round split decision on November 16th on Latino Night in Riyadh.
People want to see Zepeda use another contender for a tune-up to get him ready for his title challenge to WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson. Fighting Farmer again is pointless.
The scores
– 95-94: Zepeda
– 95-94: Farmer
– 95-94: Zepeda
Although Farmer and a handful of fans felt it should have gone his way, most people viewed it as a clear win for Zepeda. The judges ignored the body punching that Zepeda did in that fight.
If they had factored it into the scoring, the fight should have been a lopsided win for William. I watched the fight, and Zepeda won 9-1. Farmer won the fourth round due to a flash knockdown, but that’s the only bright point in the contest for him.
Punch Stats
Zepeda landed 259 of 778 Punches for a 33.3% connect rate. Ninety were body shots.
Farmer connected on 193 of 587 for 32.9%
It wasn’t a close enough fight for a rematch to make sense, but it’s understandable why Farmer would want a second chance. It gives him another payday and a chance to be seen by a lot of fans. If Tevin didn’t get this fight, he’d be back to fighting obscure fighters on smaller cards.
