Zorro vs Clarke: Continued Cruiserweight Greatness To Be Found On Taylor/Catterall Undercard

For a fight as searing hot as the rematch between Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall, the support needed to be impressive. And, certainly, it has delivered.

Ellis Zorro (17-1) comes off the first loss of his professional career, a brutal and devastating knockout at the hands of the greatest cruiserweight on the planet right now, the Australian southpaw Jai Opetaia (24-0).

However, the Day of Reckoning card proved that Ellis Zorro has heaps of heart – and no qualms about mixing with the best-of-the-best.

Hence, it comes as no surprise to see him in with the tough and determined Cheavon Clarke (8-0), a fixture of the amateur scene for many years, recently turning professional at the start of 2022. In fact, Clarke boasts an amateur win over the current WBO World Cruiserweight champion Chris Billam-Smith (19-1).

The Team GB boxer was originally set to face Issac Chamberlain (16-2) for his BBBofC British Cruiserweight title, although Chamberlain – and Ben Shalom’s Boxxer – clearly view Jack Massey (21-2) and the vacant EBU European Cruiserweight title as more important. Or, more-so than that, view a future showdown with Youtuber-and-BBBofC English Cruiserweight champion Viddal Riley (11-0) as more important.

So, with Chamberlain vacating his belt, as Boxxer fighters tend to do, it falls on the capable and always-game Ellis Zorro to be the dance partner, come May 25th.

Given the experience and capabilities of both men, it is hard to see who will come out on top; Clarke has ample amateur experience and has shown himself to be comfortable in the professional ring, whilst Zorro has grown entirely within the professional ranks and has the height and reach advantages to keep things equal.

Either Zorro will claim the second belt of his professional career – and a prestigious one at that – or, ‘C4’ will detonate, to the pleasure of those in Leeds.
