Gervonta Davis’ Transformation: Ripped or Foolish?

By Chris Williams - 04/07/2024 - Comments

Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis showed off his physique today in a video clip, already looking on weight and more shredded than a Julienne salad for his still-to-be-officially announced WBA ‘regular’ lightweight title defense against Frank Martin on June 22nd on Amazon Prime Video PPV in Houston, Texas. Tank could be panicking, taking on Martin because he’s a step up from the hand-picked fodder he’s been beating up.

Fears or Fitness?

Fans on social media believe Tank Davis is having kittens with worry about his fight with Martin, who, despite being a limited guy, is a step up in class from the random run-of-the-mill fighters he’s been padding his record with for the last 11 years.

Is an insecure Tank Davis overcompensating for his fears by training feverishly two months out? As mid as Martin is, he’s world’s better than Tank’s last three opponents, Ryan Garcia, Hector Garcia, and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero.

While it’s good that Tank (29-0, 27 KOs) is in excellent shape, it might not be the wisest thing for him to be on weight with two months to go for his match against ‘The Ghost’ Martin (18-0, 12 KOs).

A Weak Opponent Means a Weak Victory

With that said, Martin isn’t an elite-level fighter, so Tank Davis can afford to be a little weak and drained for this fight without it impacting his performance. Martin looked awful in his last fight against the fringe contender Artem Harutyunyan last July.

For that reason, Tank won’t get credit for beating him, and he would have been better off fighting one of the more well-admired fighters like Floyd ‘Kid Austin’ Schofield, Raymond Muratalla, Shakur Stevenson, Abdullah Mason, or Vasily Lomachenko.

Time to Step Up, Tank

Tank has been a world champion since 2017 and has never unified his titles against any champ despite being popular enough to fight anybody. Some see that as clear evidence that he’s been a calculated cherry-picker, who has selected his opposition with care, picking vulnerable fighters to capture his belts and defend his titles.

Fans want to see Gervonta, 30, step it up against a good fighter next after he beats the heavily muscled but slow Martin on June 22nd. It would be a good idea for Tank to fight Shakur while he’s still young because that fight won’t be easy if he waits two or three years.
