Vergil Ortiz Jr. (21-0, 21 KOs) picked up a statement win on Saturday night ahead of his fight against Tim Tszyu on August 3rd in Los Angeles, California.

Fighting at the Save Mart Arena in Fresno, Vergil disposed of Thomas Dulorme (26-7-1, 17 KOs) by a first-round knockout to remove the last hurdle before meeting with the former WBO junior middleweight champion Tszyu in August.

After the fight, Ortiz Jr. reacted to a post by Tszyu on X, in which he said they should be the main event on the August 3rd card, and Ortiz said, “I agree.” The main event for the card is Terence Crawford vs. Israil Madrimov.

We haven’t seen Ortiz in with a puncher before, so it should be interesting to see how well he holds up under the firepower of Tszyu. The Australian won’t have to worry about the height and reach of Ortiz like he did in his last bout against the 6’5″ Sebastian Fundora last March.

Given the way that Ortiz performed on Saturday night against Dulorme, boxing fans would prefer to see him being the one fighting Crawford rather than Madimov. Crawford vs. Ortiz Jr. would be an excellent fight.

There’s nothing wrong with Tszyu (24-1, 17 KOs) as a fighter, but he’s coming off a loss to Sebastian Fundora, and he didn’t looked great in that defeat. There would be more interest from fans in seeing a fight between Ortiz and Crawford.

Tszyu is going to have to raise his game considerably for him to defeat Ortiz Jr. or even be competitive with him because he’s a real beast. The only question there is about Vergil is whether he’ll pull out of the fight due to a health issue.

He’s been having tons of medical problems over the last two years, and it’s difficult to depend on him unless he’s fighting a tomato can like we saw tonight with him matched against the 34-year-old Dulorme.
