Promoter Frank Warren says Tyson Fury is in “vintage” form, having lost weight, and will “stop” IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk on May 18th in their rescheduled undisputed clash in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Time Machines Don’t Exist (Sadly)
For Fury to be “vintage” in the true sense, he needs a working time machine to bring him back to 2015. As far as this writer can tell, losing weight isn’t helping Fury because he looks as slow as ever. He doesn’t look anywhere near vintage in his recent video. Let’s get it straight.
Let’s face it: Fury will not undo years of weight loss alone. He needs a big troth filled with the Fountain of Youth’s magical waters to guzzle from and just swim in it to try and roll back the years.
Even the version of Fury that defeated Wladimir wasn’t spectacular. He barely beat an old, gunshy champion and would have lost if the Ukrainian had let his hands go the way his corner was begging him to. Fury looks as old as the hills, and he isn’t heading towards vintage on May 18th.
Fury looked pretty average in that fight and beaten no one since that you can call a good fighter.
It’s fair to say that Wladimir would have made toast out of Fury if he’d shown even a slight amount of aggression in their fight nine years ago.
A lot of naive fans who have no clue about the sport were impressed by Fury’s victories over Deontay Wilder, Dillian Whyte, and Dereck Chisora, some of the best wins of his career, but those guys weren’t anywhere near the level of Usyk talent-wise, and neither was past his best Wladimir.
Training Clips Aren’t Selling the “Vintage” Story
WBC champ Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) certainly doesn’t look near “vintage” in his training clips. He shows the same slow hand speed, lack of mobility, and saddlebags around his waist that he’d exhibited before his mysterious cut, which caused his previously scheduled February 17th fight against Usyk to be postponed.
That right-eye cut bought the 35-year-old Fury some valuable time to lose weight. He looked flabby despite having lost a lot of pounds from his previous contest against former UFC champion Francis Ngannou.
“I felt he could stop him when the contract was signed,” said promoter Frank Warren to the Secondsout YouTube channel about his view that Tyson Fury can knockout Oleksandr Usyk on May 18th.
“He [Fury] was training very hard and he got cut. What is the difference between this and going back into his training camp again is obviously, he’s had a couple of weeks out, but he’s not had to go in there losing weight,” Warren continued about Fury.
“He’s on weight, which means you’re going to get speed, you’re going to get power, and you’re going to get vintage Tyson Fury in that ring. He will knock him out,” said Warren.
