Slow-Mo Shadowboxing: Ryan Garcia’s Latest Training Antics

By Nationvegas - 03/17/2024 - Comments

Ryan Garcia posted a video of him showing off his “Slow motion shadowboxing” today while his exasperated coach, Derrick James, looked on.

It’s unclear if Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) is using this as a troll clip to get some laughs or if he’s seriously using slow-motion shadowboxing as part of his training preparation for his April 20th fight against WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney.

In contrast to Ryan’s strange training, Haney is up in the snow-covered mountains, looking, showing his inner Rocky Balboa-esque, running in. The difference between the two fighters is huge in how they prepare for their headliner on the DAZN PPV at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Exasperated Coach Alert

The look on Derrick’s face is priceless, as if to say, ‘What did I get myself into? Man, this guy is uncoachable and lost. I can’t wait until this is over with to get rid of this loss.‘ We feel you, Derrick.

Derrick is up against it, trying to train the seemingly non-engaged Ryan, who appears to be doing whatever he wants in camp. The money is good for Derrick. Otherwise, he likely wouldn’t put up with this.

Exhibit A: The Troll

It’s important to note that this is Ryan Garcia, a social media star with over 10 million Instagram followers who enjoys getting his followers worked up. The slow-motion thing could be just a gag to get fans hyped, thinking he’s ready for the funny farm.

Looking at it from that angle, you can excuse Ryan for this. Still, the look on Derrick’s face suggests that there’s no coaching going on.

Exhibit B: The Enigma

Could it be that Ryan actually believes that he’s invented a new way of training? He’s got the hand speed already, but his problems are his defense, straight-up stance, and his inability to take a good shot without dropping to the canvas. It’s impossible to know what’s going on inside Ryan’s head, especially now.
