An elated Golden Boy promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, confirmed that Canelo Alvarez will face Jaime Munguia on May 4th in a “Mexican showdown” on Amazon Prime and DAZN PPV. There’s a disconnect between what Canelo views as a great fight and that of fans.
The Matchup Fans Don’t Want
De La Hoya says he’s been asking for this fight for a long time, and it’s finally here. He co-promotes contender Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs), so it makes sense that he’s excited about seeing him challenge Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) for his undisputed super middleweight championship.
Now, it’ll be interesting to see if the boxing public in the U.S. and worldwide gets excited about seeing Canelo fighting Munguia. This fight is seen as a poor substitute for the one boxing fans want between David Benavidez and Canelo.
Promise Benavidez next: It would help market the Canelo-Munguia event if the promoters revealed that Benavidez will be next for Canelo if he’s victorious over Munguia. If they tell the fans that, there will be a lot more interest from the public in ordering this fight on PPV on May 4th.
De La Hoya’s Gushing Enthusiasm
“May 4th, it finally got done. I’ve been asking for this forever. A Mexican showdown of Canelo vs. Munguia,” said promoter Oscar De La Hoya on X, reacting to Canelo Alvarez’s fight against Jaime Munguia being a done deal for May 4th on Amazon Prime and DAZN pay-per-view in Las Vegas.
Fan Skepticism: A Mismatch in the Making? Munguia is a guy with an unbeaten record filled with weak opposition and zero substance. He’s seen as a manufactured fighter.

De La Hoya seems too happy about this fight, but it’s understandable because he’s wanted Munguia to get the Canelo clash his entire career and finally got his wish.
Munguia’s Questionable Resume
They will have to sell this fight hard to get fans interested in seeing it because Munguia has done enough to build his credibility as a viable opponent for Canelo. Munguia has only fought twice at 168, beating these two fighters:
– John Ryder: 35
– Sergiy Derevyanchenko: 38
Munguia needed a win over elite-level fighters like David Benavidez, David Morrell Jr., and Caleb Plant at 168 to make this fight huge.
With the way Munguia’s promoters have matched him, there was zero chance that he would ever face any of those three, not before getting the Canelo fight.
