George Kambosos Jr. posted on social media today that “everything is on track” for his headliner fight against Vasily Lomachyenko on May 12th at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. The winner of this fight will be the new IBF lightweight champion and will be in a position to unify against the other belt-holders at 135.
The message from the former unified lightweight champion Kambosos Jr. (21-2, 10 KOs) also seemed to suggest that he has a chip on his shoulder: “Keep doubting me.”
Bitter ex “Paper Champ”
One gets the sense that Kambosos Jr. is a bitter, sour ex-champ who feels that he’s being dismissed as the sacrificial lamb being led to the slaughter in his upcoming clash against the ultra-talented former three-division world champion Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs), who arguably should still be undefeated.
Kambosos is seen as a doomed man, and virtually no one on planet Earth gives him a chance against Loma, and that is a bitter pill for ‘The Emperor’ to take. His situation is seen as dire, and it’s not going to help him one bit to fire back at fans for seeing him as lacking in talent to compete with a phenom like Lomachenko.
Downward Spiral
After Kambosos Jr’s upset win over Teofimo Lopez in 2020, he lost his next two fights against Devin Haney. He beat Maxi Hughes by a questionable decision to get to where he is now facing Lomachenko on May 12th.
Fans certainly do doubt Kambosos, viewing him as a one-hit wonder for his upset win against a ring-rusty, injured, mentally unprepared Teofimo.
Most people realize that if Teofimo was even half-dialed in for that fight, he would have made a monkey out of Kambosos Jr. and embarrassed him on that night.
If it had played out the way it should have, Kambosos would have never had a brief moment of glory, as he would have slipped back into the shadows and been quickly forgotten by fans.
Since then, it’s been all downhill, as Kambosos lost two out of his last three fights and looked dreadfully bad in ALL of them.
Fans now see Kambosos Jr. as a former unified paper champion who is an example of what happens when a champion is unprepared for the spotlight.
Teofimo wasn’t ready to be a champion then, so he fell apart against a run-of-the-mill fringe contender who had no business being ranked #1 with the IBF.
