Hearn Disappointed but Pragmatic About Canelo vs. Munguia

Promoter Eddie Hearn expressed his disappointment at not getting the opportunity to promote Canelo Alvarez’s next fight against Jaime Munguia but PBC made a bigger offer for the May 4th match at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Hearn is happy that Canelo-Munguia will be a collaboration between Amazon Prime and DAZN to show the fight on PPV. Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) is with DAZN, so they’ll be showing the fight as well.

Berlanga: Hearn’s Likely Choice for Canelo

Hearn points out that Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) will be a free agent after his one-fight deal with Premier Boxing Champions is up with the Munguia clash, and he hopes to work with him at that time.

The Matchroom Boxing promoter Hearn doesn’t say who he’ll attempt to match against Canelo, but it’s obvious that it’ll his fighter, Edgar Berlanga, that he’ll be trying to persuade him to take for September.

Berlanga is ranked #1 WBA and is mandatory for the ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell Jr., but that’s not a fight that Hearn will be trying to make for him.

He’ll go for the big money clash with Canelo, and hope that DAZN will be willing to pay for this. It’s not a great one in terms of fan interest, but Berlanga is the only guy Hearn has to offer Canelo.

“It’s on DAZN, which is great. Obviously, he has that contract with PBC. They made him an offer by all accounts, bigger than our offer,” said Eddie Hearn to iFL TV reacting to Canelo Alvarez fighting Jaime Munguia on May 4th on Amazon Prime PPV and DAZN PPV in Las Vegas.

“We would have loved to have done the fight, but with the contract with PBC. But with the exclusivity with DAZN with Jaime Munguia, it worked out really well with DAZN. I’m happy. I’d have much preferred to be promoting the event. I love the fight.

“I think it’s a good fight for Saul. I think he’ll win in style, and then, hopefully, we can talk to him about working together. I think this is a one-fight with PBC, so this will be the last one. After May 4th, he’ll be a free agent, and let’s see if we can get him on board.

“I’ll definitely do another Saul Canelo Alvarez fight in his career, whether that’s September. We get on really well, but he’ll always take on the biggest deal or what he feels is the best deal for him. With his current contract and everything, this is a good fight for him. Like I said, DAZN gets action, so it all makes sense,” said Hearn.
