Canelo vs. Munguia Confirmed for May 4th on DAZN and Amazon Prime PPV

Canelo Alvarez’s next title defense of his undisputed super middleweight championship against Jaime Munguia is reportedly set for the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in a dual platform PPV event on DAZN and Amazon Prime on May 4th.

Salvador Rodriguez of ESPN Knockout reports that the Canelo-Munguia clash will occur on May 4th. Munguia is a better option for Canelo than the opposition he’s been fighting since his match against Dmitry Bivol in 2022. Jaime Munguia is not on the level of David Benavidez, David Morrell Jr., or Bivol, but he’s a capable fighter.

Munguia: A Step Up, But Not the Fight Fans Crave

Surprisingly, fans on social media aren’t happy about this fight being a done deal, which is a different reaction to the ones on Salvador’s social media site, written in Spanish.

They love the fight, but unfortunately, their reaction is quite different from other fans writing in English. They see this as an example of Canelo ducking David Benavidez, his WBC mandatory challenger, and the guy who has been chasing him for many years trying to get a title shot with no luck.

As long as Canelo fights Benavidez in his next fight after Munguia, fans won’t jump ship and give him on him, but it’s questionable whether he will. He’s avoided Benavidez for this long, so he’ll likely continue to do so

Blockbuster Event To Air on Two PPV Platforms

With Canelo vs. Munguia being shown on two platforms, the fight will have greater reach. However, it can’t be entirely pleasing for Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions to share the event with DAZN, as that means the PPV numbers will be split, and there won’t be as many for his new platform with Amazon Prime.

For IBF, WBA, WBC & WBO 168-lb champions Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) and Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs), it’s a good thing because they’ll be seen by more boxing, which potentially makes more money on PPV. Amazon Prime has a large subscriber base of 200 million around the world.

It may be difficult for Canelo, Munguia, and PBC to take advantage of that large subscriber base, as Amazon Prime subscribers have to navigate the website’s maze to the video area and the sports section.

It’s not an easy-to-see section where the sports area is on the website, so there may not be as many buys as some think unless Amazon chooses to advertise on the front page of their site, which is highly unlikely.
