Canelo Alvarez is already working hard for his next fight on May 4th, possibly against Jaime Munguia in Las Vegas. Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) is negotiating with PBC for a new one- or two-fight deal after his talks with DAZN fizzled. Canelo risks alienating fans if he doesn’t face an elite fighter next.
In the video below at the bottom, Canelo is putting in a lot of work on the bag, working on his power, for it should be a war if his next opponent is Munguia. This fight could be a rock ’em sock ’em robots type affair, and it’ll be fun to watch for as long as it lasts.
Munguia: The ‘Safe’ Choice?
Canelo’s fight with Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) is reportedly 95% agreed upon, so hopefully, they can finalize it for Amazon Prime PPV in Vegas.
If Canelo signs a two-fight deal with PBC, it’ll be interesting for fans to see who the second fight will be against in September. Munguia is a good fight for May 4th on Cinco de Mayo, but the boxing public wants Canelo to step up against David Benavidez and, if not him, David Morrell Jr.
Canelo can avoid a backlash against him if he fights either of those guys, considering that people are not very interested in seeing him defend his undisputed super middleweight championship against Edgar Berlanga or Jermall Charlo.
Munguia’s Recent Improvements
The 27-year-old Munguia, who is now trained by Freddie Roach, showed improvement in his game recently with his ninth-round knockout win over John Ryder on January 27th.
Munguia dropped Ryder four times in the fight and showed that his talent was on another level than the British fighter, who had lost a one-sided 12-round unanimous decision in his previous fight last May against Canelo.
“I like Benavidez, and I like Munguia. If I were in the position as a fan, I would say, Benavidez or Munguia,” said former two-division world champion Jessie Vargas to Little Giant Boxing YouTube channel when asked who Canelo Alvarez should fight next.
“As Canelo’s promoter, I’d say Munguia. He’s a younger fighter. He’s strong, but he’s younger and still inexperienced. So, get him now before you get him later because if you get him a little bit too late, the fight will be more difficult.
“He’s only getting better. Even after he [Munguia] loses that fight, he doesn’t really lose anything. He’s only going to get bigger. He’s going to gain experience, and get a big paycheck. That’s how I see it, and he’s going to get a lot better in the future, so Canelo should get him now.
“Munguia has a bright future ahead of him. He’s a good fighter and has got a good promoter behind him. I saw a stronger fighter, I saw a fighter that could manage his distance better,” said Vargas on what improvements he’s seen with Munguia with his new trainer Freddie Roach.
