Ryan Garcia will be in a “tough spot” career-wise if he loses his fight against Devin Haney on April 20, says promoter Eddie Hearn. A defeat at the hands of Haney would have dire consequences for Ryan’s career.
Although he doesn’t come right out and say it openly, Hearn is hinting that Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) might be done if he loses his fight against WBC light welterweight champion Haney (31-0, 15 KOs).
The Slippery Slope
The defeat would be Ryan’s second in his last three fights, indicating he can’t hang with the top-tier fighters. What Hearn is getting at here is if the popular social media star Ryan loses, he could have a hard time getting well-paying fights against other top fighters. It would be a difficult pill for Ryan to swallow seeing his paydays drop off
“Ryan deserves a lot of credit because if he loses to Devin Haney, he’s in a pretty tough spot,” said Eddie Hearn to the media about Ryan Garcia on what he’s up against facing WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney on April 20th.
Haney: A Formidable Challenge
“He’s moving up to 140, so this is his true weight class,” said Hearn. “There’s no rehydration clause, and Devin is really difficult to beat. It’s not like you’re in with a guy that is a bit limited, and you can find a way. Devin is very tricky and very skillful.
“So, again, if Ryan loses this fight, he’s not in a great position, but he’s also young. But we should be commending that rather than saying, ‘Oh, you’re done. you’re finished.’ You should be looking to take the biggest challenges in the sport,” said Hearn.
Hearn is saying that Haney’s defense and agility will make it difficult for Ryan to achieve victory in this fight. Haney isn’t someone that Ryan can depend on his power alone to win. It will take more than that, and it’s unclear whether Ryan has the skills needed to defeat this fighter level.
