Gervonta Davis Confirms Frank Martin Fight, Faces Fan Disapproval

Gervonta “Tank” Davis seemingly confirmed today that he’ll be fighting Frank Martin next. The unbeaten WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Tank posted a photo of him and Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) on Instagram, showing the two fighters standing across from one another in a boxing pose. Tank quickly deleted it, making fans suspect the fight won’t happen.

Doubts Linger Amidst PBC Rumors

Fans doubt the Davis vs. Martin fight will go down. The reports of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) having financial problems and fighters fleeing like rats from a sinking ship leave fans skeptical that the Tank-Martin clash will occur.

There’s been no confirmation from PBC that the Baltimore native Gervonta will be fighting ‘The Ghost’ Martin, who is ranked #3 with the WBA, and it sounds like Tank is just hoping the fight will take place.

The fight has failed to excite the boxing public, who see it as another example of Tank Davis failing to face the oppoisition that people want to see. It’s just a cherry-pick on Tank’s part, selecting a guy who looked poor in his last fight against Artem Harutyunyan and was fortunate that his opponent gassed out in the later rounds.

Another “Easy” Matchup?

Fighting Martin instead of the killers at 135 is pathetic, making it clear that Tank Davis wants no part in fighting the best. He’s keeping himself unbeaten by avoiding the best, and that, in turn, is causing his popularity to diminish.

The fighters that Tank SHOULD be fighting:

  • Shakur Stevenson
  • Vasily Lomachenko
  • Raymond Muratalla
  • Andy Cruz
  • Abdullah Mason
  • Floyd Schofield
  • Edwin De Los Santos

Most would agree that Tank’s popularity is eroding due to his reluctance to give the fans the fights that they want to see. Some would argue that Tank’s management at PBC has enabled him, allowing the pampered fighter to face soft jobs one after another while avoiding the opposition that could potentially beat him.

Tank’s popularity could be so much higher than it is today if he fought quality opposition that fans wanted to see, but he’s been allowed to fight weak fighters to ensure that he stays unbeaten.
