Canelo’s Camp Denies Alleged $55 Million Offer for Benavidez Fight

Eddy Reynoso, the trainer and manager for undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez, has revealed that there was no $55 million offer given to them from Al Haymon’s PBC for him to face David Benavidez in his next fight.

Lewkowicz’s Claim Under Question

Reynoso was responding to the reports of Benavidez’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, saying yesterday that $55 million had been offered to Canelo for the fight with his fighter. It’s unclear why Lewkowicz mentioned the money offer if it didn’t happen. Was this to create pressure on Canelo?

Reynoso spoke to ESPN Knockout, saying that no offer had been made for a fight with Benavidez. He further said that within a week, they should have information about Canelo’s next fight.

Reynoso: No Offers, But Announcement Coming Soon

“We are considering the options; being the biggest boxing star today does not mean that business is easy; we are looking for the best, and next week, we will give you the information,” said Reynoso to ESPN Knockout. “If we have not said anything, it is because some things are missing; we continue working not only in May but also in September.”

The way Reynoso is talking, it doesn’t appear that Benavidez is in the cards, which means he’s going to have to go with his plans revealed yesterday about moving up to 175 to fight for the WBC interim light heavyweight title against Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June or July.

Of course, that’s if Benavidez goes through with the fight. Are Benavidez and his promoter Lewkowicz serious about going up to 175, or is that in the same category as the $55 million offer, which Reynoso says never existed?

Reynoso on Lewkowicz and Al Haymon

“Canelo Team has a direct line with Al Haymon, and I really doubt that anyone from PBC will come out to support what he is saying for wanting to save the way he has handled his fighter,” said Reynoso about the so-called $55 million offer to fight Benavidez.

“It is not our fault that Benavidez has not had the opportunities that they shout so much about; our job is for Canelo to shine and continue to shine as before,”

It’s going to be interesting to hear who Canelo’s opponent will be for his May 4th fight, but you can bet that it’s going to be a big name that will have the boxing world excited.
