PBC will pay Canelo Alvarez his massive $35 million guarantee for his next fight if he faces #1 WBO super middleweight contender Jaime Munguia on May 4th.
According to ESPN MX, they won’t pay him the $35M if he fights Jermall Charlo, as that match is expected to sell. Here’s the problem: Canelo said recently that his next fight would come against an American. Munguia is from Mexico, so Canelo would have to change his mind for that match to take place.
The Money Problem
Canelo’s massive $35 million purse with PBC can’t be guaranteed if he fights Jermall (33-0, 22 KOs). If Canelo doesn’t agree to take the fight with Munguia, as the PBC want him to, he “can look for other options outside of PBC,” said a source to ESPN Knockout.
“Not many promoters can give him that guarantee of around 35 million dollars, and some he has already worked with before.” It could be next to impossible for Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) to get that kind of money with another promotional company for a lesser fight against Jermall Charlo.
Enter Munguia
With that said, Munguia isn’t much better. Canelo vs. Munguia might sell in Mexico, but Americans wouldn’t be eager to pay to see that on PPV. Maybe some fans in the U.S. will be eager to see Canelo fight the badly flawed Munguia, but it will probably not be enough for the event to turn a profit.
Al Haymon’s PBC could be making a mistake if they believe that fans want to see Canelo face the unbeaten #1 WBO-ranked Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs), who has one of the most padded resumes in the sport.
Munguia has only fought three times since moving up to 168 against these guys:
- Jimmy Kelly
- John Ryder: 35-years-old
- Sergiy Derevyanchenko: 38
At 154 and 160, Munguia’s best career wins were against these fighters:
- Liam Smith
- Gabriel Rosado: 38
- Kamil Szeremeta
- Sadam Ali
- Dennis Hogan: *controversial
- Gary O’Sullivan
If Canelo leaves PBC, that will not be good for that company, as they don’t have a lot of options for great fights with their new deal with Amazon Prime. Fans aren’t interested in next month’s PBC card headlined by Keith Thurman vs. Tim Tszyu.
Without Canelo fighting on PBC, who do they got? David Benavidez is with PBC, but he’s not a PPV fighter. His last fight against the old timer, Demetrius Andrade, reportedly bombed on PPV last November.
