Canelo Alvarez Confirms American Opponent for May 4th Clash

In a teasing game, Canelo Alvarez stated today that his next opponent for May 4th will be An American for the Cinco de Mayo holiday, without revealing the name of who he’s fighting on that date. Canelo says he’s not fighting a Mexican fighter, which appear to rule out David Benavidez and Jaime Munguia as potential opponents for that date.

“There is no shooting between Mexicans! 🚫🇲🇽 Canelo’ Álvarez assures that he will not face Jaime Munguía in May,” said Box Azteca on X.

This bit of information given out by the Mexican star, Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) would appear to confirm the reports that surfaced last night, saying that Jermall Charlo is the opponent that he’ll defend his four super middleweight titles against on May 4th.

Jermall Charlo, the Likely Candidate

Boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez has shed light on his upcoming Cinco de Mayo fight, confirming his next opponent will be an American boxer. This news seemingly validates reports that he will defend his undisputed super-middleweight championship against the unbeaten Jermall Charlo.

The question that fans have is why Canelo isn’t naming his opponent. It’s likely that he’s still negotiating with that fighter and doesn’t want to confirm the fight without it being a done deal. That makes sense.

If it is the 33-year-old Jermall (33-0, 22 KOs), it’s a good choice, as he’s got power, skills, and enough boxing ability to give Canelo a serious run for his money. When Jermall was at his best back in 2020, he was worlds better than Jaime Munguia, the fighter that a lot of boxing fans in Mexico and the U.S want to see Canelo fight if he’s not going to face their #1 choice, David Benavidez.

Jermall is a better fighter than Munguia when he’s at the top of his game, and he’ll be a formidable test for Canelo. The unbeaten Charlo holds down the WBC middleweight title, having held the title since 2018.

Jermall’s best wins have come against these fighters:

Sergiy Derevyanchenko
Juan Macias Montiel
Jose Benavidez Jr.
Julian ‘J-Rock’ Williams
Austin Trout
Dennis Hogan
Matt Korobov
Cornelius Bundrage

Awaiting Official Announcement

Fans will have to wait for the official announcement of Canelo’s next opponent on May 4th. Hopefully, that will happen today rather than weeks or months from now. If the fight is shown on Amazon Prime PPV, it’s even more important that Canelo reveals his opponent sooner rather than later.
