George Kambosos Jr. says he views his fight for the vacant IBF lightweight title against Vasily Lomachenko as his shot at redemption when they meet on May 11th on ESPN in Perth, Australia.

Kambosos Jr. (21-2, 10 KOs) can turn his career around with a victory over former three-division world champion Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs).

It’s not that Kambosos’ career is in bad shape, considering he’s only lost twice, both times coming against Devin Haney. But he wants to show that he’s capable of beating the top-level fighters, and Lomachenko fits in that category.

George says the money and the IBF title aren’t the important thing. It’s all about his legacy, and if he can defeat Lomachenko, he will have done something special for his career.

Lomachenko & Kambosos Jr. met today for the kickoff press conference to discuss their fight and their hopes of winning the IBF belt.

Kambosos Jr.: “This Fight Rejuvenates My Career”

“This fight rejuvenated my career. It gives me redemption. Yes, I’ve been in big fights. I’ve fought the best. I’ve won the big fights. I’ve lost the big fights,” said George Kambosos Jr. during today’s kickoff press conference for his May 11 fight against Vasily Lomachenko for the vacant IBF lightweight title in Perth, Australia.

“For me, this is legacy. It’s not about anything else. It’s not about money. It’s not about winning another world title, and it’s the same for Vasily Lomachenko. He has made money, and I have made money.”

Some boxing fans believe Lomachenko should only have one defeat in his career against Teofimo Lopez because he fought well enough to deserve wins against Devin Haney and Orlando Salido.  Lomachenko is coming off a 12-round split decision loss to Haney last May.

A Different Kambosos

“He has won belts, and I have won belts. This fight is legacy. Two orthodox warriors coming together for a big, big fight, and I think both of our careers are on the line here. Hall of Fame is on the line here, and I believe this is my destiny. This is a different Kambosos you’ll see on May 12th.”

“Vasily Lomachenko is one of the greats. No one is going to turn around and say anything bad about Vasily, and this is why we’re so, so eager for this fight to take place on May 12th, here in Perth,” said George Kambosos Sr.
