Eddie Hearn Says Munguía’s Youth and Desire Could Make Canelo Fight “Competitive”

Promoter Eddie Hearn says Jaime Munguia’s youth and heart make him very competitive against Canelo Alvarez if the two fight next on May 4th.

It’s believed that the 27-year-old Munguia is one of the two options that Canelo is considering for his fight in May for his debut on Amazon Prime Video PPV.

The Matchroom boss was impressed with the performance from Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs), destroying his fighter, John Ryder (32-7, 18 KOs), by a ninth-round TKO on Saturday night at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Hearn says if Munguia doesn’t get the fight with Canelo, he’d like to set up a fight between Jaime and Edgar Berlanga. He feels that would be a massive contest, and he’s right. Berlanga has huge power, is young, and has a big following in New York.

Technical Advantage to Canelo

“I think Canelo is heavy-handed, and I think he has heavier hands than Jaime Munguia,” said promoter Eddie Hearn to Fight Hub TV when asked if Jaime Munguia can defeat Canelo Alvarez if they fight next.

“I think he’s [Canelo] technically better. I think his IQ is much higher, but Jaime has one thing on his side, which is youth. He’s 43-0, which is quite bizarre.

“He’s young and fresh. He’s been in a couple of wars, but Canelo is not young and fresh anymore. I think that’s a competitive fight. If I’m Canelo Alvarez, you’ve got two fights. Munguia and Benavidez.

“If I’m Canelo Alvarez, I know who I’m choosing for money, and that’s Jaime Munguia. I think it’s competitive. Jaime is fresh and has a lot of heart. You saw in the Golovkin [trilogy] fight.

“Golovkin didn’t have the desire, really [against Canelo], and Jaime will. He’ll give it everything, and that’s why it’ll be a great fight. If they don’t get that fight made, I want to make Jaime Munguia against Edgar Berlanga,” said Hearn.
