Trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. says he wants unbeaten super middleweight contender Christian Mbilli for his son, David Benavidez’s next fight. He says he liked what he saw in the highly ranked Mbilli’s recent sixth round stoppage win over Rohan Murdock on January 13th in Quebec City, Canada.
Jose Sr. is still not interested in a fight between WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell and Benavidez for some reason. He says the guys he wants for Benavidez are these three:
- Canelo Alvarez
- Christian Mbilli
- Jermall Charlo
Mbilli (26-0, 22 KOs) is ranked #1 WBA and #1 WBC, so he’s probably not going to bother fighting Benavidez because all he has to offer is his WBC interim 168-lb belt, and that’s not enough when he’s on the doorstep to a world title shot against undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez.
Mbilli: The Undefeated Monster
“The young fighters, the undefeated fighters, and the very talented fighters, those are the ones we want to fight,” said Jose Benavidez Sr. to Fight Hub TV about David Benavidez’s next contest. “All these fighters are good fighters, and it’s going to be really exciting.
“I would love to fight Jermall Charlo, but come on, David would stop him. With the performance I seen with my other son, Jose Benavidez Jr., he would destroy him. I don’t think it would be a fair fight for an exciting fight.”
Jermall Charlo isn’t going to agree to fight Benavidez because he’s in the running for Canelo’s fights in May and September. Benavidez isn’t even under considerable for Jermall.
“We want exciting fights. We want fights that bring danger and that are 50-50,” said Jose Sr. “So, I don’t think Charlo is a 50-50 fight. I would take it in a heartbeat, but I’m going to be honest with you. That’s a fighter [Jermall] that deserves Canelo or David [Benavidez] at this point, but I would love that. That would be easy money, easy fight.
Morrell: The Rejected Champion
“We want to give fans good fights, hard fights, and I don’t think fans would be happy with that either. The other one is Morrell, and the guy [Christian Mbilli]. He looked spectacular. He’s ranked #2. The guy is a monster.
“He’s an animal, too. He has 25 fights and is undefeated. He looked great. That’s another guy that we would love to fight. That’s a dangerous fighter right there,” said Jose Sr. about wanting Mbilli for David Benavidez next.
