Airing live at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in Showtime Boxing’s final telecast, the co-main of the David Morrell-Sena Agbeko event featured a highly anticipated rematch that also served as a WBA Lightweight Title Eliminator as Jose “El Rayo” Valenzuela knocked out Chris Colbert (17-2, 6 KOs) in the sixth round.
The fight was taking on the appearance of deja vu when Valenzuela hurt Colbert early, but he didn’t finish him. Colbert was able to come back with his jab and some solid combinations like he did in the first fight, but this time, Valenzuela didn’t allow the fight to go to the scorecards.
Back in March of this year, Jose Valenzuela landed a left hand in the first round that sent Chris Colbert down to the canvas. Colbert was able to get up and continue to fight, as his jab was his main weapon.
Valenzuela had a big advantage in the power shots landed, but in the end, Chris Colbert was awarded the controversial unanimous decision victory. All three judges shockingly scored the bout 95-94 in favor of Colbert.
On Saturday night Jose Valenzuela was seeking vindication, and in the first round, he landed a flurry of shots that sent Colbert down to the canvas.
Colbert was able to get up and regain his composure, and in the second round, Colbert landed the double jab-right hand combination on multiple occasions.
Colbert started the third round by landing a four-punch combination, but Valenzuela ended the round by landing a flurry of shots. In the 5th round, Colbert was absorbing a lot of punches while using the high guard.
Valenzuela came out in the sixth round, landing rights and lefts, but Colbert was able to respond by landing a few shots of his own.
With 1:19 left to go in the same round, Valenzuela knocked Colbert out cold when he landed a hard right hand.
Jose “El Rayo” Valenzuela (13-2, 9 KOs) got his vindication as he beat Chris Colbert in spectacular fashion. Colbert suggested they should have a rubber match, but Valenzuela dismissed the idea because he felt that he already won both fights.
Instead of a third match with Colbert, Valenzuela has his sights set on a more lucrative fight. During the post-fight interview, El Rayo stated he wants to fight the WBA (Regular) champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis.
