Jose Benavidez Sr. wants Plant, Morrell or Jermell next if Junior defeats Jermall on Saturday

Trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. is already thinking past his son Jose Sr’s co-feature fight against Jermall Charlo this Saturday towards what he hopes will be against his twin brother, Jermell, Caleb Plant, or David Morrell Jr.

Jose Sr. seems delusional, talking about wanting to match his son Benavidez Jr. against those three fighters because he doesn’t seem to realize he has virtually no chance against Jermall on Saturday night.

The look on Jose Sr’s face when he was talking, he convinced that this kind of thing could happen. It’s the same look he gets when discussing how Canelo Alvarez will be forced to fight David Benavidez if he’s victorious over Demetrius Andrade. It’s just dream stuff.

Benavidez Sr.’s inclusion of WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell Jr’s name among the potential foes that he’d like Jose Jr. to fight next seems weird, like he’s trying to use him as a test to see if it’s safe to give David Benavidez the green light to face the unbeaten Cuban.

Jose Sr’s big three for Benavidez Jr:

  • David Morrell
  • Jermell Charlo
  • Caleb Plant

Does Jose Jr. belong in the ring with any of those guys? It’s hard to see Benavidez Jr. lasting more than a minute against any of those guys and could get really bad if he were to face Morrell. He would not only beat Benavidez Jr but put a hurt on him that would force the ‘Mexican Monster’ to try to step up and avenge his loss.

If Benavidez Sr. doesn’t have confidence in the ‘Mexican Monster’ against Morrell, it doesn’t make sense for him to throw Jose Sr. because his career, such as it is, could be finished off if he gets in the ring with this talented fighter.

Jose Sr. is hoping his son, Benavidez Jr. (28-2-1, 19 KOs), can hit the jackpot with a victory over the unbeaten Jermall (32-0, 22 KOs) on Showtime PPV and that the victory to get an even bigger fight against  Plant or Jermell.

Fighting Morrell might be a step too far for even Benavidez Jr., but you can’t fault Jose Sr. for dreaming big. It would be a miracle for Benavidez Jr. to defeat Charlo because, on paper, this fighter is levels above him in the talent department, career accomplishments, and wins over quality opposition.

Jermall Charlo will return from a layoff to face Jose Benavidez Jr. in a ten round fight on the undercard of Benavidez vs. Demetrius Andrade on Showtime PPV at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.

Other fights on Saturday’s Showtime PPV card

  • Subriel Matias vs. Shohjahon Ergashev
  • Hector Luis Garcia vs. Lamont Roach

Benavidez Sr. names his wishlist for Jose Jr’s next fight

“I don’t give a f*** what they did. I care more about what we did. I see Junior, he had a great camp, super motivated, no injuries, and I’m hoping they didn’t take him seriously because that benefits me in order to look spectacular,” said Jose Benavidez Sr. to Fight Hub TV about Jermall Charlo.

It doesn’t matter if Jermall didn’t take Benavidez Jr. as seriously as he should. He’s still likely to make easy work with him and get him out of there before six rounds.

Yeah, Benavidez Jr. lasted until the twelfth round with Terence Crawford in 2018, but Jermall is bigger & stronger than he is, and he’ll be looking to stomp Jose Jr. from the first round. He won’t let Benavidez Jr. box him like Crawford did in their fight five years ago.

“Maybe after that, we could get a fight with Caleb Plant, and we could get a fight with [David] Morrell and all these other fighters or maybe his brother [Jermell Charlo], who knows? So, I hope he’s telling the truth,” said Jose Sr. about Jermall Charlo, saying he only tried two to three weeks for his fight with Benavidez Jr.

If Benavidez Jr. does luck out and wins over Jermall on Saturday, PBC will push for an immediate rematch and make it worthwhile for Jose Jr. to take the fight. They won’t let Benavidez Jr. move on and face Plant, Morrell, or Jermell.

None of those fights would be competitive, and you couldn’t sell them to the public. Morrell might be agreeable to fighting Benavidez Jr. if he felt that it would lead to him getting the ‘Mexican Monster’ in his next fight, but Jermell & Plant won’t waste their time with him because there’s no money in facing a lower-level guy like him.

“I think for this camp, Junior matured. He was awake before me to go run. I was like, ‘Whoa, I’ve never seen this,’ and I see he’s super motivated. I think these people [Team Jermall Charlo] chose Junior because, in their opinion, they think it’s a tune-up,” said Benavidez Sr.

“They got to be ready because Junior trained very hard for this fight, and there’s going to be a big surprise,” said Jose Sr.
