David Benavidez on Canelo Alvarez: “He needs me and I need him”

David Benavidez insists that Canelo Alvarez needs him to make the biggest fight in boxing, and he won’t give up trying to make it happen. He wants that fight to happen next in May 2024, and he’ll be training.

Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) says his goal is to become a legend in Mexican boxing, and for him to do that, he must fight Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs). The way that Benavidez pushes for the Canelo fight seems unhealthy and too pushy.

Benavidez is trying too hard and cutting corners by not taking risks with his career by fighting killers like David Morrell, Dmitry Bivol, Artur Beterbiev, and Jai Opetaia.

To be a legend, Benavidez may need to get there without being blessed by a fight with Canelo because there are no guarantees that he will help out the light heavyweight-sized fighter.

If Benavidez doesn’t get the fight in May, he’ll look bad if he swerves David Morrell because that’s a match-up that many fans want to see.

It would look bad for Benavidez to avoid Morrell while constantly talking about how Canelo must face him. That would make it clear to all that Benavidez is only looking for a payday and wants to use Canelo to increase his popularity and help him become a PPV star.

His dad, Jose Benavidez Sr., had talked of him moving up to 175 to take on Dmitry Bivol, but David likely won’t do that if he’s going to be getting a fight with Canelo in September 2024. He won’t want to take the risk.

Benavidez wants Canelo fight in May

“I knew it would be a difficult fight, but I knew I had enough to beat Demetrius Andrade. Truthfully, I feel the fight between me and Canelo should be in May 2024,” said David Benavidez to Fight Hub TV about his insistence that Canelo Alvarez fight him next.

“We’re ready for this opportunity, and we’ll give the fans what they want. Truthfully, both of us. He needs me, and I need him. He’s a legend in the sport, and I think for me to do what I want to do in Mexican boxing, I need to fight Canelo to get to that level to be a legend in the sport.

Benavidez has things twisted in his head if he believes Canelo needs him because he’s got a lot of quality fighters he can face, and he’ll still make a lot of money. Canelo’s legacy is already set, and not fighting Benavidez won’t change it.

If Canelo says he wants the fight next September, Benavidez states he’ll be ready to face whoever.

“Truthfully, my work right now is to just fight against the best. Whoever it is who wants to fight me, we’ll be ready to fight them,” said Benavidez when asked if he has an opponent in mind for his next fight if he can’t get the Canelo match.

David won’t give up pushing Canelo match

“To defend my interim WBC belt, I’ll fight all of them. It doesn’t matter,” said Benavidez. “I feel like I can beat all of them, and this is what we are going to do. I feel this is the biggest fight; this is the fight that boxing needs right now.”

If Benavidez thinks he can beat all of them, he needs to step up to the plate and face WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell and/or move up to 175 to take on Bivol, like his dad, Jose Sr., keeps blabbing about.

The way Jose Sr. is talking, it’s like a given that Benavidez will move up to light heavyweight to fight Bivol if he can get the Canelo fight. Was Jose Sr. just flapping his gums for clout-chasing purposes to try and increase Benavidez’s popularity the cheap way? That might be it.

“It’s a good fight, and we’re going to keep trying to make that fight happen. We’re 100% ready for that opportunity, 100% for this fight, and give the people what they want to see,” said Benavidez.

The neediness in this one is too strong. Benavidez should back off already before he causes Canelo to ignore him forever, because it’s too much already. Have some pride, man.

“Well, if he [Canelo] wants to fight in September, then we’re ready. We’re ready for everything. It’s a very difficult fight, and I would need all that time to train,” said Benavidez.

“But hey, I’m ready to get back into training and begin camp again. If he wants to do it in May or September, I’m ready for whatever,” said Benavidez.
