By Brian Webber: Jermell Charlo (35-2-1,19 KOs) was disappointed with his performance against undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs), saying he regretted not fighting with more aggression in his one-sided twelve round unanimous decision at the T-MobileArena in Las Vegas.
Charlo says he thinks he could have done more but failed to. Choosing not to go fallout to win, Jermell let Canelo run away with the fight, winning an easier decision than in his last fight against John Ryder, which is surprising.
Going into Saturday night’s fight, boxing fans had thought this would be a 50-50 affair, with Jermell having a real shot at winning, but was nowhere near the same classes as Canelo.
The scores were wide inCanelo’s favor, with the judges scoring it: 118-109, 119-108.
“I could have been more aggressive. I could have done a lot more,” said Jermell Charlo at the post-fight press conference following his loss to Canelo Alvarez on Saturday night. “Possibly, I’ll come back to 154 and listen to my coaches about what I’ll do next.
“Of course, but it’s about making the most money and getting the best fights at this point in my career,” said Jermell when asked if he’d like to become undisputed again at 154. “Fighting Brian Mendoza or Tszyu isn’t as satisfying to me sometimes. I’ll follow the plans of my management and go from there,” said Jermell.
“Yeah, Terence Crawford could be my next opponent. He’s a champion, and my brother Errol got to get it on with him. He wants his lick back. Terence Crawford has been talking s**t, and it’s going to bring a different animal out of me. I don’t know which animal.
“I would like to take to somebody with the WBO to see what kind of issues they could resolve,” said Jermell about the World Boxing Organization reportedly stripping him for failing to defend against his mandatory Tim Tszyu, choosing to go up to 168 for a massive payday against Canelo.
“I don’t know if they already made their decision, but that was already taken from me from the beginning before the fight, and that sucks. It’s part of life, and I have to continue to roll with the punches, but Jermell Charlo never gets the fair end of the stick. I got to get mine.
“But I believe going up two weight classes to fight for the undisputed and continue to stay active because I wasn’t active for a year because I was out with a hand injury. The moment I got injured, the fight was canceled [with Tszyu]. The WBO sent me letters, sent me 30 letters, had me going back and forth to the doctors.
“They must really have a relationship with the people in Australia, and that’s okay with me. I just got to continue to be champion and fight,” said Jermell.
