By Allan Fox: Terence Crawford’s trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre was in a celebratory mood today, posting on social media, giving his thoughts on being released from historic HM prison in Birmingham, England, following his incarceration for the possession of a loaded firearm in his suitcase last September at the airport.
In a move that some fans question, the judge in the case released BoMac, giving him a 20-month suspended sentence for his gun charge. Many people believe BoMac should have been given a stiff five-year prison sentence, given the seriousness of the offense.
What went through BoMac’s head to make him think he could bring a gun into an airport? That’s the big question. How did not know that he couldn’t be carrying a dangerous firearm onto an airplane?
The heavyset ‘BoMac’ pleaded guilty and was shown leniency by the British courts. He was ordered to pay a small fine of £1,000.
‘BoMac’ thanked the HM Birmingham prison staff for their “hospitality” towards him. It’s unclear whether he was given special treatment due to his being a celebrity trainer who not only coaches the well-known undisputed welterweight champion Crawford but also trains British fighter Chris Eubank Jr.
Last September, ‘BoMac’ was arrested at the Manchester airport in England after security discovered a loaded firearm in his luggage while he was in the process of leaving the country. He’d been in the UK for Eubank Jr’s recent with Liam ‘Beefy’ Smith on September 2nd.
“Thank you, HMP Birmingham Prison, for your hospitality for the five weeks; all the guards and inmates were nice and cool. Sorry, I couldn’t stay longer, but due to my outstanding legal team from the USA and London, I have to get back to work, work time!” said Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre on social media after being released from jail on Monday in Manchester, England.
It’s debatable whether ‘BoMac’ should have been released from prison. If this is the norm for the UK, with regular citizens being allowed to go free after loaded pistols are found in their suitcase, then one can understand why ‘BoMac’ was allowed to get off scot-free without doing a lengthy five-year term in the 174-year-old HM Birmingham prison.
However, if a regular non-famous citizen in the UK would be given a stiff prison sentence for the same careless mistake, it’s not fair that ‘BoMac’ was allowed to go free with a 20-month suspended sentence.
As long as this is the norm for the average UK person to be given a minor slap on the wrist, it’s not a big deal that ‘BoMac’ is being set free back into circulation.
‘BoMac’ says he’s going back to work. The 36-year-old Crawford is his BoMac’s main fighter, but he’s near the end of his career and will likely retire after two or three fights.
Crawford has been sounding like a broken record lately, calling out 168-lb champion Canelo Alvarez, trying to get an undeserving title shot against him.
