Top Rank boss wants Daniel Dubois for Jared Anderson

By Brian Webber: Top Rank boss Bob Arum says he’d like for British promoter Frank Warren to allow the recently knocked out Daniel Dubois to face Jared Anderson.

Arum is trying to quickly push the 23-year-old Anderson (16-0, 15 KOs) to a world title, and he needs well-known fighters like Dubois (19-2, 18 KOs) for him to get experience and build up his popularity worldwide.

It would be a risky fight for Anderson to take because Dubois possesses knockout power in either hand and if he can land anything solid on the youngster, he’ll KO him.

It’s unclear whether Warren would allow the 26-year-old Dubois to be cannon fodder for Anderson to mow down because he hasn’t given up on the big 6’5″ lump despite his recent poor showing in his ninth round knockout loss to IBF, WBA & WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk last month on August 26th in Wroclaw, Poland.

Warren believes that Dubois deserved a knockout victory against Usyk when he dropped him in the fifth round with a shot on the belt line, which the referee ruled as a low blow. Usyk was then given an extended amount of time to recover. He was down on the canvas for close to five minutes.

If the appeal is denied for the results of the Usyk-Dubois fight to be overturned, it might be a good idea for Dubois to be allowed to fight Jared Anderson because it’s a match-up that Daniel could turn his career around with one blow. Anderson has shown to be chinny, as we saw in his fights with Charles Martin and Jerry Forrest.

If Dubois can get to Anderson early, he’s got a good chance of scoring a knockout. Of course, the longer the fight goes, the more likely that Anderson wears down Dubois and eventually stops him.

Usyk later dropped Dubois twice and stopped him in the ninth round. The shots that Dubois went down from weren’t big, and it appeared to some boxing fans that he flat-out quit, similar to how he lost his fight with Joe Joyce.

“Perfect. If Frank [Warren] will serve him up to me, we’ll take him,” said Bob Arum to  Sky Sports News about his hopes that British promoter Frank Warren will let his heavyweight Daniel Dubois face Jared Anderson.

It’s debatable whether Arum is serious about wanting Dubois for Anderson because that’s a dangerous fight for Jared, who has this awful pull-back style that he uses, which led to him getting hurt twice in his fight against old-timer Charles Martin.

He’s [Jared Anderson] fighting again in November. I think it’s a Thursday, the 16th, in Vegas on a big card with Shakur Stevenson [and Edwin De Los Santos], the week of the Formula One race in Las Vegas.

Anderson will likely be in the co-feature spot on the Shakur Stevenson vs. Edwin De Los Santos card on November 16th in Las Vegas, which is a debatable move unless Jared is matched against a quality fighter. However, Arum will unlikely put Anderson in with anyone talented because he can’t punch and has no chin.

Then he will have fought four times this year, and we hope to have him in the ring four more times next year, and then we’re going to go for a world title,” Arum said about the 23-year-old Anderson, who has said that he plans on retiring by age 27.

In other words, Arum hopes to have Anderson fighting for a world title in 2025. By that time, WBC champion Tyson Fury will have retired, and Usyk will be too old to offer up much resistance to the youngster.

Given that there would be four titles for Arum to target, it’s predictable that he’ll maneuver Anderson away from these killers:

  • Deontay Wilder
  • Anthony Joshua
  • Zhilei Zhang
  • Filip Hrgovic
  • Arslanbek Makhmudov
