By Jake Tiernan: IBF flyweight champion Sunny Edwards was negating the ability of WBO  champion Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez today during their press conference to discuss their December 16th unification fight on DAZN at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

You have to give Edwards credit for showing the courage to take on Bam Rodriguez because, on paper, he’s over-matched against the American in every department.

Of course, the money that Sunny is getting paid for this fight by his promoters at MatchroomBoxing makes it worth taking this gamble. Even if Sunny loses, he’ll cry his way to the bank, and he can start over.

The 27-year Sunny (20-0, 4 KOs) says he’s fought guys that were as good or better than Bam (18-0,11 KOs) during his seven-year professional career.

Sunny doesn’t name the guys that he feels are better than Bam, but it would have to be one of these guys because he struggled to beat all of them.

Due to Edwards’ lack of punching power, all of his fights are difficult for him, and he has more than a few close calls.  Obviously, it’s a matter of time before he loses, and Bam will likely end his tw0-year reign of terror as the  IBF 112-lb champion on December 16th.

“He’s a very good fighter, but I feel a 30-year-old Bam would be better than a 23-year-old, and that’s how it is. I feel like I’ve been in with better fighters every bit as good as him,” said Sunny Edwards during today’s kickoff press conference, bad-mouthing Jesse ‘Bam’Rodriguez ahead of their December 16th flyweight unification fight in Glendale, Arizona.

Bam looks unbeatable right now at 112. No one in this weight class can compete with him, particularly a light puncher like Sunny Edwards. Even at 115, Bam might be the best fighter in that weight class as well.

He’s a guy that is on another level than the rest of the fighters at 112 & 115. If he loses to Edwards, it would be a massive upset and a huge blow to his career, which is on its way up.

Bam has beaten better fighters than Edward already, with his wins over Srisaket Sor Rung Rungvisai,  Israel Gonzalez, and Carlos Cuadras. Edward is a good finesse-level fighter, but he lacks the pop in his punches to beat a talent like Bam.

“I’ve been in with fighters that if he’d have been in with them, they’d be very hard fights.  We’ll find out in the ring. I don’t need to get in his head. I don’t need to try and draw him back & forth. I just like speaking about the fight. I wake up every day excited about it,” said Edwards.
