Terence Crawford open to Canelo Alvarez fight at 158-lb catchweight

By Allan Fox:  Terence Crawford has changed his mind and is now willing to fight Canelo Alvarez, albeit at catchweight at 158-lbs to drain the Mexican star.

Unfortunately, Crawford won’t be getting a fight with Canelo unless he changes his stance and moves up to 168. Of course, that would also depend on whether the two could negotiate a match. With Crawford likely wanting parity with Canelo, he’d be laughed out of the room during talks.

It would be a fly on the wall to hear Crawford asking for a 158-lb catchweight and a 50-50 split with Canelo. Talk about having delusions of grandeur. One win over a weight-drained Errol Spence has turned Crawford into a fighter that thinks he can call the shots with Canelo.

Crawford’s recent win over Errol Spence seems to have gone to his head, making him believe he’s on equal footing with the Face of Boxing Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs).

Canelo obviously isn’t going to agree to fight Crawford at 158, as his weight class is 168, and the Nebraska native isn’t in the same league as him in terms of popularity.

Crawford calling the shots with Canelo

Unless Crawford comes down from the clouds, he will miss out on many potential mega-fights. If Crawford thinks he can call the shots with Canelo, you got to assume he’ll do the same with Jermell Charlo, Jaron Ennis, Tim Tszyu, Keith Thurman, David Benavidez, Caleb Plant & Dmitry Bivol.

“Well, catchweight. We can do something at a catchweight,” said Terence Crawford to the Breakfast Club Power 105.1 when asked if he’d like to fight Canelo Alvarez.

“160. 158 would be cool. Crawford. Come on, man,” said Crawford.

It sounds like Crawford is going in the same direction as Andy Ruiz Jr., negotiating himself out of mega-fights, and he’ll wind up with nothing to show for the remaining years of his career, apart from a rematch with Errol Spence.

Even that fight isn’t a sure thing because Spence will likely be advised by his management to take a couple of tune-ups before entertaining the idea of fighting Crawford again.
