By Sam Volz: Errol Spence Jr’s headliner welterweight contest against Terence Crawford will be selling for a break the bank $84.99 on Showtime PPV on July 29th from the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas. Interestingly, UK fans are getting the event for just £19.95 on TNT sports pay-per-view.
That comes out to $26 in American money, which is a steal compared to what U.S fans have to fork over to watch the Spence-Crawford event.
The drawback of the organizers of the Spence vs. Crawford focusing on charging U.S. fans to the hilt by going for as much as the market will bear is that it’s going to lead to many turning to illegal streams to watch it free of charge.
Obviously, the fight will be quickly uploaded on Youtube moments after it’s over, and even when it’s taken down, it’ll be put back up by other posters for fans to watch without the need to pay. Trying to stop this from happening is like the whack-a-mole game. It’s impossible to stop.
It would have been wiser for the organizers to charge fans a fair price of $65 for the Spence-Crawford event because there would be more boxing fans willing to pay that price without feeling the need to turn to piracy to see it for free.
We’ll see whether the $84.99 price will work with fans because this could be a massive disappointment if it fails to bring in the numbers the organizers are looking for. If it fails, the rematch will likely have a fair price that won’t break the bank, like $65.
“Errol Spence is a big welterweight, and he’s a natural southpaw. He’s big, he’s strong, and he goes to the body good in the ring. His IQ is very good in the ring, but he does get frustrated,” said Kell Brook to Fight Hub TV about Errol Spence Jr.
“In the fight that we had, I was catching him with shots, and he was getting frustrated, and he shows it. The thing for me is the inactivity that he’s had.
“Terence Crawford, to me, can box either style, southpaw, or orthodox. He’s a very good sharpshooter and finisher. When I got in with Terence Crawford, I knew he was going to be sharp, but it was the way he can switch in a fight.
“It’s all naturally against a world-class fighter and be so relaxed, and just the angles that he was chucking his shots, it was surprising.
“Errol Spence is more grinding, thumping kind of power. His is sharper and snapping, Terence’s is, and it’s surprising.
“One day, I’m saying Crawford and the next, I’m saying Spence. It’s one of them,” said Brook.
