Coming up at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a bout that will be televised on Showtime and PPV.com– unified IBF/WBC/WBA welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr will square off against WBO welterweight champion Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford.
This is a fight that theoretically could have, and probably should have happened years ago. Spence first captured the IBF welterweight title back in May 2017 when he beat Kell Brook. And Crawford first made the jump to 147 back when he beat Jeff Horn for the WBO welterweight title in June 2018, which marked Crawford as a three division champion.
Demand for a Spence vs Crawford showdown started heating up from that point forward, but as the years continued passing without the fight materializing, fans began losing hope and interest. But the two have finally come to terms, and have done so at a time when the match up still holds great historical significance.
This battle between two dominant undefeated welterweight champions will produce the first undisputed world welterweight champion during the modern 4-belt era, and it will likewise produce the first undisputed world welterweight champion since Zab Judah last held that distinction way back in 2006. In addition to that, it will arguably be the most significant boxing match since Floyd Mayweather Jr defeated Manny Pacquiao more than 8 years ago, and it will undoubtedly be the most significant welterweight championship bout since the 2015 showdown between Floyd and Pacquiao. And the fact that Spence and Crawford are both undefeated champions only adds to the intrigue.
