Canelo Alvarez working on cardio for Jermell Charlo fight

By Sean Jones: Canelo Alvarez is working on his cardio to improve his major weakness in preparing for what is expected to be a fast pace shootout against Jermell Charlo on September 30th on Showtime PPV. Canelo has ten weeks to work on his cardio, which should be enough time if he does it right.

A video of Canelo jogging with Oscar Valdez was posted today, showing him working on his conditioning and looking good. The only thing that is missing from Canelo’s cardio work is wind sprints on a track and running up steep hills.

With Canelo’s problems with his cardio, he needs to do a lot more than just light jogging if he wants to improve his stamina enough to keep up with Jermell.

Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) is a fighter that has had stamina issues his entire career, but the problem has worsened in his last fight fights, and it’s gotten to the point where something has got to be done about it.

What Canelo needs to win:

1. Trim down
2. Wind sprint of 100, 200 & 400 meters
3. Hill training at top speed.
4. Jog fast, not slow.
5. Work on mobility
6. Focus on combination punching
7. Don’t load up on shots

Jermell (35-1-1, 19 KOs) has always had an excellent engine, and he’s going to be coming up from 154, which could benefit him in this fight.

If undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo gasses out against Jermell, he’s going to be humiliated worse than he could ever imagine. The way Dmitry Bivol beat Canelo in May of last year would be kid stuff compared to what Jermell will do to him if he gets tired and winds up a punching bag against the ropes.

Bivol could have knocked Canelo out if he’d thrown more flurries as he did in the fifth rround. Dmitry lacks the killer instinct, so he didn’t press his foot on the accelerator when he had Canelo’s back against the ropes from rounds 3 through 12.

Jermell is a different type of fighter, and if he sees Canelo looking tired, fighting off the ropes, he’s going to unload everything in the book to get him out of there. He’s not going to have mercy on him.

“Canelo is very powerful, very powerful,  but I feel that Charlo has a chance. He’s an undisputed champion, and he’s fought the best in his division,” said Ashley Theophane to Fighthype about the Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo fight.

“I don’t think it’s a Canelo win. We’ve seen Canelo lose. He can lose. If he [Jermell] can take his power, he can win. That’s what it comes down to. I thought Plant was winning the fight until he got stopped.

“Billy Joe,  I thought, was doing good until he got stopped. So if he can use his jab and box, it’s about the power if he [Jermell] can take his power.”
