By Brian Webber: Fans want to know why Ryan Garcia fired his trainer Joe Goossen today after a short three-fight run.
The four reasons that are floating around social media for Ryan canning the 69-year-old Goossen are these:
1. Mole in camp
2. Absence during the post-fight press conference
3. Lack of useful instructions during the Tank fight
4. Goossen was too complimentary
If Goossen didn’t show up for the post-fight press conference, he had a good reason. He’s NOT the type that would abandon his fighters after a defeat, even if they were a know-it-all type that stubbornly ignored his instructions, as many believe is the case with Ryan Garcia.
It appeared to some that Ryan wasn’t listening to anything Goossen told him in between rounds, as he was doing whatever he pleased during the fight, believing that he knew more than his coach.
Ryan appeared disengaged, looking at the crowd, drinking in the attention he received during the contest with Gervonta. It looked like a textbook example of a fighter with an attention deficit, unable to concentrate on his coach because of his racing thoughts.
The moment was too big for Ryan, and instead of him taking the blame, Goossen is the one getting it and has now been axed.
When you got a young kid that feels he knows it all, and he’s filthy rich on top of that with millions in the bank and more money coming in by the truckload, it’s not a shock that he was tuning out what Goossen was telling him to do.
Goossen, a well-known coach that has been around boxing for ages, is being sacrificed by the Instagram/boxing star Ryan (23-1, 19 KOs) after his recent loss to Gervonta Davis on April 22nd in a mega-fight on DAZN & Showtime PPV.

Under Goossen’s watch, Ryan looked like the same upright, stork-like fighter he’d been, and there was no chance he could beat an A-level guy like Tank Davis fighting like that.
Ryan’s inability to change & learn under Goossen highlights the fact that he wasn’t applying what was being told to him by his wisened coach.
It’s clear now that Ryan didn’t listen to what was being said to him by Goossen, and instead of acknowledging that he messed up, he’s canning his coach and looking for someone else.
