By Adam Baskin: Shakur Stevenson says Vasyl Lomachenko was a victim of a “robbery” on Saturday night in his title challenge against undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Stevenson states that he had Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs) winning 8-4 and sees the decision as a pure “robbery.” The judges gave it to Haney 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113.
Haney ran out of the ring
Shakur didn’t like how Haney fled the ring after saying a few words to ESPN after the scores were announced. Stevenson feels that Haney should have stuck around and faced the music.
The fans were booing Haney like crazy after the contest, and they continued to boo him as he ran out of the ring to his dressing room.
#1 WBC-ranked Stevenson says he wants to fight Haney and says it wouldn’t be competitive at all. It’s unclear whether Haney will stay at 135.
After the fight, Haney complained about it being difficult to make 135, and that might move up. He also said he could stay at 135 for fights against Gervonta Davis and Shakur.
“Lomachenko won. I had it 8-4 Lomachenko,” said Shakur Stevenson to Fighthype, moments after Devin Haney’s controversial twelve round unanimous decision over Vasyl Lomachenko on Saturday night.
“He [Haney] said something and then ran out of the ring in some weird stuff. I know Dev. He’s tougher than that. He should have stayed there and faced the music.
Lomachenko was robbed
“8-4 Lomachenko. Nah, I thought it was a robbery, because Lomachenko won,” said Shakur when asked if it was a ‘close fight.’
“I’m not even going to give y’all the secret. I’m going to hold onto the secret,” said Stevenson when asked what he saw in Haney’s performance that he felt he could capitalize on.
“I don’t think it’s competitive at all,” said Shakur about a fight between him and Haney.
There’s not much Lomachenko can do about his loss. As Loma said this week, this was his “last chance” to try and become undisputed lightweight champion, and he came up empty. Haney will most certainly NOT give Lomachenko a rematch.
If Haney stays at 135, it’ll be to fight Stevenson or Tank Davis. Other than those two, there’s no one else that Haneey will fight before he vacates his four lightweight belts and moves up.
Lomachenko should think about moving back down to 130 or 126 because he can only hope for a chance to fight for one of Haney’s four belts once he vacates.
