Ryan Garcia: “Loma should have won”

By Dan Ambrose: Ryan Garcia says he had Vasyl Lomachenko defeating Devin Haney last Saturday night because he felt he landed the “cleaner shots” throughout their 12 round contest in the Top Rank show.

Ryan stated that the outcome of the Haney-Lomachenko fight “hurts boxing. With the win, the 24-year-old Las Vegas resident Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) held onto his undisputed lightweight championship over the visiting fighter Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs), who is from far away Ukraine.

Ryan isn’t the only one that felt that Lomachenko deserved the victory over Haney, as there is a massive amount of fans that saw Loma winning. Virtually the entire MGM Grand Garden fans last night booed loudly and for a long, long duration after the results of the fight were announced.

Haney = the bigger money guy than Loma

Some fans would argue that Haney represented the money side in this fight, as he’s younger, from the U.S., and has a more extensive fan base in the country than the 35-year-old Lomachenko.

If you’re looking at this from a business sense, Haney is arguably the bigger money guy for fights against Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis than Lomachenko.

Given the vast potential for big business with Haney fights, it’s not a significant shock that he won the contest last night. It makes sense business-wise for Haney to have won the fight, even if he didn’t appear to in an absolute sense.

“This is what hurts boxing. Loma should have won. I don’t get it. I was there. Loma was landing the cleaner shots and finished the fight strong,” said Ryan Garcia on social media.

Bob Arum: “All the fans around you thought it was a pretty one-sided fight for Lomachenko. So everybody was stunned when the judges’ scorecards were read,” said Top Rank promoter Arum to the media at the post-fight press conference following Devin Haney’s win over Vasyl Lomachenko.

Vasyl Lomachenko: “All the fight I was controlling the fight, and I understood that I was winning this fight. When the twelfth round ended, I was sure I won this fight.”

Egis Klimas: “I was the first protest to have Dave Moretti as a judge, and the commission said, ‘He is one of my best judges,’ and that proved again today,” said Lomachenko’s manager Klimas when asked about the judge Moretti scoring the 10th round to Haney, which some boxing fans felt was Loma’s strongest rounds of the fight. Moretti scored the fight 116-112 for Haney, which was the widest margin for the three judges.
