Mauricio Lara Loses to Leigh Wood In Manchester!

By Ken Hissner: At the Manchester Arena, Manchester, Lancashire, UK, Saturday over DAZN Eddie Hearn (Matchroom Boxing) presented in the Main Event in the rematch WBA World Featherweight champion Mauricio “Bronco” Lara lost his title at the scales and then in the ring to former WBA World Featherweight champion Leigh ‘Leigh-thal’ Wood over 12 lopsided rounds.

In the Main Event, WBA World Feather champ Mauricio “Bronco” Lara, 26-3-1 (19), #129 ¾, of Mexico City, MEX, was dominated by former WBA Feather champ Leigh ‘Leigh-thal’ Wood, 27-3 (16), #126, of Gedling, Nottinghamshire, UK, over 12 rounds.

In the second round, with twenty seconds remaining, Wood landed a left hook on the chin, and down went Lara for an 8-count from Referee Steve Gray. Lara went after Wood after recovering and doing well to the bell. In the third, Lara came back well enough to take the round and suffered a cut on his left eyebrow from a clash of heads.

In the fourth and fifth rounds, Lara continued getting the best of Lara, who, having not made weight, seemed sluggish.

In the seventh round, Wood kept on the pressure with a solid jab while Lara had his moments. In the eighth and ninth rounds, Wood continued to dominate. In the tenth round’s final minute, Wood pushed Lara with his left off balance to the canvas. Referee Gray warned both of clashes of heads.

In the eleventh round, Wood kept the jab working well. In the final minute, Lara landed a left to the chin of Wood, getting his attention.

Lara being desperate being far behind, is chasing Wood in the final seconds. In the twelfth and final round, Wood had the fans on their feet, knowing he was a round from winning the title. In the final minute, Wood rocked Lara with a right to the chin.

Scores were 116-111 and 118-109, twice the same as KH.

Former IBO Super Feather champ and current WBA World Super Welter champ Terri “Venom” Harper, 14-1-1 (6), #150 ¼, of Denaby Main, Yorkshire, UK, defeated former IBO champ and current WBC Silver Welter champ Ivana Habazin, 21-5 (7), #152 ½, of Zlatar, CRO, over 10×2 rounds.

In the first round, Harper outworked Habazin. In the second round, with a little over a minute remaining, a left from Harper on the chin of Habazin almost dropped her knocking her several steps. In the third and fourth rounds, Habazin had better rounds taking them. In the fifth round, Harper almost dropped Habazin with a flurry of punches in the final minute of the round.

In the sixth round, it was close, with Harper having an edge. In the seventh through the ninth rounds, Harper outworked the game Habazin. In the tenth and final round, Harper continued getting the best of Habazin. The referee was Steve Gray.

Scores were 98-92 and 97-93 twice, as did KH

Super Light southpaw Jack ‘El Gato’ Catterall, 27-1 (13), #140, of Chorley, Lancashire, UK, dominated southpaw Darragh ‘Super‘ Foley, 22-5-1 (10), #139 ½, of Bondi, New South Wales, AUST, ten rounds.

In the first three rounds, Catterall had his way, but Foley was in it all the way. In the fifth, the aggressor Foley came back well enough to take the round though suffering a bloody nose.

In the seventh round, Catterall dropped Foley and hit him while he was down. Referee Howard Foster took away a point from Catterall after issuing an 8-count. In the ninth round, Catterall scored another knockdown. In the tenth and final round, Catterall continued his dominance of the fight.

Scores were 99-88, 98-89, and 97-90, as did KH.

Welter Danny Ball, 13-1-1 (6), #146 ½, of Kingswinford, West Midlands, UK, stopped Jamie ‘Ginger Rocket’ Robinson, 15-6-2 (4), #146 ¾, of Bolsover, Derbyshire, UK, after eight rounds for the vacant British title of a scheduled ten rounds.

In the second round, Ball hurt Robinson early, scoring a knockdown for an 8-count from referee Reece Carter. In the fourth and fifth rounds, Ball knocked the mouthpiece out of Robinson’s with a right on the chin.

In the sixth round, Robinson came back well enough to take a close round. In the seventh round’s final seconds Ball hurt Robinson with a right on the chin. In the eighth round, midway Ball landed half a dozen unanswered punches. At the end of the eighth round, the corner of Robinson refused to let him out. The referee was Reece Carter.

Super Light Campbell Hatton, 12-0 (5), #142, of Hyde, Lancashire, UK, stopped southpaw Michal Bulik, 6-3 (2), #138 ½, of Opole, POL, in the fifth round of an 8.

The referee was John Latham.

Super Feather Aqib Fiaz, 12-0 (1), #130, of Olham, UK, defeated Costin Ion, 10-4-2 (5), #132 ¼, of Romania and Marbella, SP, over eight rounds.

In the third round, it looked like Fiaz dropped Ion, but it was ruled a slip due to a left pushing more than hitting. Ion kept coming forward as Fiaz countered him well to take another round. In the final seconds of the fifth round, a right from Fiaz on the chin rocked Ion. In the sixth round, Ion dropped Fiaz with a left hook for an 8-count from referee John Latham.

In the seventh round, Ion came back well enough to take it. In the eighth and final round, Ion knowing he was behind, was trying his best and even taking the round but not enough to overcome Fiaz for the win.

Scores were 76-75 per referee John Lathan, 78-74 KH.
