By Geoffrey Ciani: The big undisputed lightweight showdown between champion Devin Haney and Vasyl Lomachenko delivered in terms of showcasing two elite level prizefighters under the big spotlight. But the fight was not without a degree of controversy in the aftermath.

It was an intriguing clash of styles. There were a lot of close and competitive rounds that were tricky to score, with neither boxer allowing the other to gain any real momentum.

Haney was mixing up his attacks, where he was landing a nice variety of crunching blows downstairs; and you had Lomachenko studiously looking to get himself into position where he has that amazing ability to manufacture those tricky angles in speedy combinations. Both of these guys were having effective moments, and if you break each round down to a dozen or so mini-battles, Haney and Lomachenko were each typically winning at least a handful of those mini-battles, with the rounds largely being decided by the other few.

Lomachenko began building some momentum in the final third of the contest, where he shined especially bright in round 11, where Lomachenko’s championship heart and considerable skills and smarts were all being exhibited under the big spotlight. For the first time in the fight, someone had seized command of the action and built a little real momentum, and Lomachenko had Haney looking mighty confused and uncertain. To his credit, Haney rebounded well in the 12th and final round. At the conclusion of 12 rounds of high level action, Haney was awarded a unanimous decision victory.

Many fans were outraged by the decision, feeling Lomachenko deserved the nod. Was this fight a robbery? Or was it something more along the lines of a vocal faction claiming a close and competitive fight that could have gone either way was a “robbery”?
