Jermall Charlo not being stripped by WBC, Sulaiman supports him

By Craig Daly: WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has confirmed that he will continue supporting Jermall Charlo as the middleweight champion of the World Boxing Council’s organization despite his nearly two years of inactivity without defending his belt.

WBC president Sulaiman doesn’t say why his organization allows Jermall to keep his middleweight title without stripping him or giving him the champion in recess tag for their inactive belt-holders.

Many fans want the inactive Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) to be stripped of his WBC title because he hasn’t defended it since June 19th, 2021, against Juan Macias Montiel. Twenty-one months have elapsed since the Charlo twin made his last defense, and he still has no fights scheduled.

Will Jermall Charlo reclaim his WBC 160-lb title?

Charlo will turn 33 on May 19th, and it’s questionable whether he’ll be able to hold onto his WBC title for much longer without the sanctioning body losing patience with him and finally making the logical move of stripping him.

It’s believed that when Jermall returns to the ring, it’ll be to campaign at 168, as that’s where he can make the most money fighting David Benavidez, Canelo Alvarez, and Caleb Plant.

The WBC might as well do the contenders a huge solid by stripping Jermall now because it doesn’t seem likely he’ll defend his middleweight title again. If he does, he’ll be making a massive mistake that could cost him millions because he could lose.

If Charlo stays at 160, he’ll need to defend against his WBC mandatory Carlos Adames, and that’s not a fight that will bring in a lot of money. Moreover, it’s one that Jermall will likely lose.

Adames is red-hot right now and in the prime of his career. He’s not someone you want to fight after you’ve been inactive for two years and coming off a poor performance against Juan Macias Montiel.

“It was a wonderful meeting, very nice,” WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said toIzquierdazo about his meeting with Jermall Charlo. “He has been through complicated personal issues. He thanked the WBC for the support that we have given to him.”

He is our champion, and he is coming forward,” Sulaiman said.

If you’re a middleweight contender, you sure don’t want to bother with the WBC’s rankings because if they’re not going to force their champions to defend their titles for years on end, that’s not the place you want to be.
