Tank Davis hoping for 2 million buys for Ryan Garcia fight

By Dan Ambrose: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis says he’s hoping his fight with Ryan Garcia will pull in 2.1 million pay-per-view buys on Showtime on April 22.

Since the 2 million PPV mark is one that is considered hugely successful, that’s a number that Tank (28-0, 26 KOs) would like to reach in 45 days from now against the unbeaten Ryan Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

It helps that Ryan has over 9 million Instagram followers, and Tank has 4.3 million.

If Gervonta’s old former promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr also helps drive interest in the fight with his 28.7 million followers on Instagram, this fight could break the 2 million buy mark.

Still, it’s difficult to imagine the Tank vs. Garcia fight doing more than one million PPV buys. That’s likely the high water mark for the fight, and it would be surprising if it did more than that number, given all the piracy going on with illegal streams.

“I think more,” said Tank Davis to Premier Boxing Champions when asked if his fight with Ryan will do a one million pay-per-view buys.”We’re pushing for two million, 2.1. Hopefully, this can break big numbers, and I’m all for it.

“I’m willing to do whatever to break them numbers. I never headlined in Vegas, and I remember going to a Floyd vs. Cotto fight, and after the fight, so many celebrities were walking about after the fight. It was crazy. I used that as motivation.

“Recently, I went to the Super Bowl and watched Rihanna perform and how she could control the crowd. That really excited me. That really gave me the drive.

“That’s what I want. I’m pretty sure Ryan wants that too. So that’s a battery to put in our bag and keep pushing forward. I’m really focused on the fight, and training. I’m actually worrying about when he’s training and not training and things like that,” said Gervonta when asked if he knew how his ring walk would go.

“I’m not what they portray me to be. Even when they blow it out of proportion. A lot of people don’t get enough of me, so they go off of what other people say about me and whatever is in the headline that day and whatever comes out about me.

“People don’t see me that much on Instagram. They probably see me talk crazy on Twitter. I’m only on Twitter when I’m in camp. I only delete it because I’m trying to get endorsements. After I say what I say, it’s over. I don’t want to keep going back and forth.

“I might be mad at that moment, but I’m not no more. I picture it both ways, to be honest,” said Tank Davis when asked if he pictures how his fight with Ryan is going to play out in his mind. “Why I say I see it both ways is to keep my mind sharp, so I don’t just focus on one thing, and that’s winning.

“I want to focus on if he’s in the lead. I want to focus on so that I can handle it when it comes. I feel I try to be realistic with myself.

“This fight is what saves boxing today,” said Oscar De La Hoya to Fighthype about the Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia fight. “I fought every style. I’m a huge advocate of the jab, that’s it,” said De La Hoya when asked how he’d fight Tank Davis is he was young and still competing.

“A jab stops everything, and what you do after is on you. But I would throw double, triple, four jabs, five jabs, and then throw combinations left and right. I loved throwing four, five, six-punch combinations on your toes.

“You’ve got to fight them long, but who knows? I don’t know boxing,” said De La Hoya.
