By Geoffrey Ciani: ChatGPT is all the rage these days, but what does ChatGPT know about professional boxing and the long rich history of the sport?

This edition of Rummy’s Corner will provide a light-hearted improvised experiment to test the boxing knowledge of ChatGPT. This was by no means a serious experiment, but it was an entertaining endeavor that produced some interesting results. Is ChatGPT a reliable resource for researching boxing history?

On the whole, ChatGPT provided a lot of accurate information, even when being asked questions that are very subjective and not based on fact – such as providing a list of the Top 5 Heavyweights of all time. Indeed, ChatGPT gets quite a lot of things correct, from dates and years, to specific details, and it even is impressively accurate in some instances. However, when it was incorrect, it was often way off base, oftentimes making humorous claims that are not true.

For example, according to ChatGPT, Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe squared off as professional boxers, not once, but twice! This fantasy scenario with no basis in reality reads like creative fan fiction about the 1990s heavyweight championship landscape. Most boxing fans wish that Bowe and Lewis met at all, but according to ChatGPT their two fight rivalry was supposedly one of the most important that transpired in the heavyweight division of the mid 90s. There were other mistakes as well, and ChatGPT seems to have some difficulty understanding the concept of a draw.

Maybe one day I’ll do a more serious and thorough fact checking examination of our future overlords in the AI realm, but the technology clearly isn’t there yet. It does get a lot of things correct, at times remarkably so, but in no way, shape, or form can it be depended on as a reliable fact checking research assistant.
