Ryan Garcia wants to “break” Lomachenko after Tank Davis

By Adam Baskin: Ryan Garcia didn’t react too well to Vasyl Lomachenko predicting victory for Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis over the popular Golden Boy star last weekend.

Ryan (23-0, 19 KOs) asked his fans on Twitter today about him targeting Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs) next after he finishes off Gervonta on April 15th.

Last Saturday night, the former three-division world champion Lomachenko was asked about his thoughts on the Tank-Ryan fight while attending the Luis Nery vs. Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan card in Pomona, California.

When Lomachenko was asked his thoughts on the Gervonta vs. Ryan fight, he told Fighthype, “I think Davis finishes him. We saw Ryan Garcia had problems with [Luke] Campbell.”

Lomachenko might not get past undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney in their fight on May 20th, making it pointless for Ryan to talk about breaking him. The guy that Ryan will need to break is Haney, not Lomachenko.

It’s hard to picture Ryan Garcia beating Gervonta because he doesn’t have the experience to prove he can pull that off.

If Ryan’s promoters at Golden Boy had put him in against better opposition, he’d potentially have a better chance of winning.

It’s likely that if Golden Boy had matched the 24-year-old Ryan tough his entire seven-year career against fighters like Frank Martin, Jorge Linares, Lomachenko, Shakur Stevenson, Teofimo Lopez, Tank, and Isaac Cruz, he would have lost many times.

The Tank Davis vs. Ryan Garcia fight still isn’t even signed yet, so it’s a little premature to be giving predictions on the outcome.

With that said, pretty much the entire boxing world is picking Tank (28-0, 26 KOs) to win, and the reason is simple. Ryan has only fought one halfway decent opponent in his career, Luke Campbell.

Ryan didn’t impress against Campbell and was dropped hard in the second round. Lomachenko and Jorge Linares both did a better job of beating Campbell than Ryan.

The real question is, where does Ryan Garcia go after he loses to Gervonta Davis on April 15th? It’s good that Oscar De L Hoya talks about Ryan and Tank fighting three to four times, but that’s unrealistic.

If Ryan gets blown out of the water against Gervonta, he’s going to have to move on and try and pick up the broken pieces of his career at 14o. Unfortunately, Ryan is going to need A LOT of luck trying to rebuild at light welterweight against these killers:

  • Regis Prograis
  • Arnold Barboza
  • Richardson Hitchins
  • Teofimo Lopez
  • Sandor Martin
  • Gary Antuanne Russell
  • Jose Ramirez
  • Subriel Matias
  • Josh Taylor
  • Jack Catterall
  • Liam Paro

Golden Boy will likely steer Ryan around all of those fighters, so he’ll wind up facing the fringe-level guys like Jose Pedraza, Richard Commey, Montana Love, and Steve Spark.
