By Geoffrey Ciani: Last night I had another John L Sullivan dream.
That dream got me thinking about the passage of time, and how in boxing just like in real life, the younger generation eventually takes over for the old guard, and with the passage of time – in boxing terms – certain names survive the test of time during the long rich history of professional boxing, and in terms of heavyweights in particular, from John L Sullivan to Tyson Fury. And in between we had many all time great heavyweight champions including the likes of Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Muhammad Ali, and the great Lennox Lewis – the last undisputed world heavyweight champion, more than 20 damn years ago.
With the 8 year anniversary just around the corner, this 250th edition of Rummy’s Corner will provide 5 quick random boxing opinions, with opinions on the current state of boxing broadcasting with today’s broadcasters and various streaming services; the 4 boxing sanctioning bodies – the WBA, the WBC, the IBF, and the WBO, the fact that we have not had an undisputed world heavyweight champion in more than 20 damn years, and some other random observations about the current boxing landscape and also a legend from the past, whom I believe is the greatest ambassador to boxing I have personally witnessed in my lifetime.
