By Vince D’Writer: On Saturday night, January 7th, at the sold-out Capital One Arena in Washington D.C., the WBA (regular) lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis started a new chapter in his professional boxing career as he defeated Hector Luis Garcia (16-1, 10 KOs) by way of technical knockout.

Seventeen years ago, Floyd Mayweather Jr. betted on himself by leaving Top Rank, taking control of his career, and going on to become the biggest star in the sport of boxing. Recently Gervonta Davis announced that he’s no longer with Mayweather Promotions, and ironically he is currently betting on himself trying to duplicate what Mayweather did during the course of his legendary career.

Davis’s test runs in regard to taking control of his career began on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 19,731. His opponent, the reigning WBA super featherweight champion Hector Luis Garcia started the first round as a cautious fighter.

Similar to the challenger, the defending champion Gervonta Davis, also started the opening round tentatively as neither fighter wanted to over-commit and make a crucial mistake. As a result of their initial approach, very few exchanges occurred in the first round of the bout.

During the next couple of rounds, Hector Luis Garcia became more active by consistently feinting and throwing the jab. In the fourth round, Gervonta Davis finally closed the distance, stood in the pocket, and landed some solid combinations.

In the 6th round, Garcia had a few good moments as he experienced success by using his jab and going to the body of his opponent. Garcia came out in the next round, continuing to let his hands go, and he had some early success, but Davis was able to close out the round by landing a series of hard left-hand shots.

Davis continued to press forward in Round 8 until a dispute in the crowd caused the referee to call a timeout and bring a halt to the action. After the delay, the action in the ring resumed at the two-minute mark, and Davis went back to work. He landed a couple of left hands during the course of the round, and he closed out the 8th by landing a right to the body and a devastating left up top that staggered the Dominican boxer Garcia.

Gervonta Davis knew his opponent was hurt as he was standing near the center of the ring, anxiously awaiting the sound of the bell to start Round 9. Hector Luis Garcia remained seated as he told his cornermen he couldn’t see, and as a result, he was unable to answer the bell for the start of the round, and just like that, the fight was over.

During his post-fight interview, Hector Luis Garcia gave some clarity to the abrupt ending to the fight.”I didn’t know where I was, I mean when he hit me with that shot. My head still hurts, and my vision is bad, but that’s what happened.”

Gervonta “Tank” Davis (28-0, 26 KOs) has officially completed his first fight on his own, and it generated positive results. In addition to his devastating punching power, Davis showed patience, speed, elusiveness, and a high boxing IQ. He knew Garcia was trying to set traps, so Davis fought a technical fight until he sensed the opportunity to go into attack mode.

The 28-year-old Davis had a successful test run as it relates to being on his own, and now he has the opportunity to navigate his career in the direction of accomplishing some great things inside the ring. He has the talent, and he has the potential opponents to change his status from a star to ‘THE’ star of boxing.

Like him or don’t like him, Gervonta “Tank” Davis is surgical inside the squared circle. The combination of his skill set and the power he possesses in both hands makes him extremely hard to beat. When Davis posts comments on social media, he uses the hashtag “The One,” and each time he steps inside the ring, he’s gradually transitioning that hashtag from his opinion into a fact.

Currently, in the lightweight division, the undisputed world champion Devin Haney holds all the major belts, but Tank Davis continues to be the featured attraction of the weight class. Now that Davis is no longer with his former promotional company, he has more leeway in regard to signing on to participate in major fights.

During his post-fight press conference, a reporter made Davis aware of a social media post from the first big-name opponent on Tank’s list.

The journalist read the tweet in which Ryan Garcia stated, “Goodbye Tank, it’s over for you.”

In addition to Ryan Garcia’s tweet, Jake Paul posted a tweet of his own statement he was picking Ryan Garcia to knock Davis out. Tank Davis seemed unimpressed by their posts, and he provided an immediate response.

“Jake Paul is a clown, and Ryan is a baby clown. Tell him to get ready. That’s what they do; they like to try to get fame off of other people’s victories and things like that. It shouldn’t be no more talking; it should just be working.” Davis went on to state, “I’ll be getting ready. I ain’t doing no more talking. He just have to sign on that dotted line.”
