George Kambosos Jr talks Gervonta Davis’ win over Hector Garcia

By Jack Tiernan: George Kambosos Jr is happy for Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis following his ninth round injury stoppage win over Hector Luis Garcia last Saturday night in Washington, D.C.

Despite the oddball scores turned in by the three judges that worked last night’s Gervonta-Hector fight, Tank Davis was getting outboxed by Hector Garcia and looked like he was in danger of losing.

Hector Garcia exposed, once again, a problem that Tank Davis has when facing fighters with boxing ability. Tank gets outboxed by better-skilled fighters and is forced to rely on his power to bail him out.

Tank arguably was beaten by Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz in December 2021 and won a controversial decision. Even against the novice Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, Davis struggled to win rounds.

Still, the former unified lightweight champion Kambosos Jr signals that it’s only a matter of time before one of the higher-level fighters at 135 can take the shots from the unbeaten Tank Davis (28-0, 26 KOs) and ultimately defeat him by a decision.

Of course, if all of Tank Davis’ fights have the same type of judges that worked his match against Hector Garcia (16-1, 10 KOs) last night, he might not ever lose because all three of them had Gervonta up by a wide margin, scoring it 78-74, 79-73 and 79-73, at the time of the stoppage in the ninth.

With that kind of judging, Tanks’ opponents might need a knockout every time to have a shot at defeating him. If Tank retires while he’s still in his prime, like he’s been talking about, his chance of losing by knockout will be eliminated.

“Good on him. Congrats on the win. I saw bits & pieces on it. Supposedly, it was a very close fight until he got him out of there,” said former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr to Fighthype, reacting to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’ win over Hector Luis Garcia last Saturday night.

“That’s the thing with Tank. Yes, he’s got that extraordinary one-punch power that stops people and takes them out, but he can get away with it now. Still, the higher-tiered fighters, the higher-calibered fighters will be able to take them shots,” Kambosos Jr continued about Gervonta.

How long will he leave the rounds before he gets outpointed? So, we’ll see. Ryan Garcia, that’s a great fight. Full respect for both of them for stepping up if they do get it done.

“Obviously, we know the politics in boxing. Sometimes, they don’t get done even though they said it’s done. It’ll be a great fight for boxing,” said Kambosos Jr.
