Deontay Wilder says fans want knockouts, not titles from him

By Charles Brun: Deontay Wilder says his fans don’t come to see him fight for world title straps as they want to see him knock out his opponents, not win useless trinket belts that have lost whatever meaning they once had in this era.

The titles are now meaningless for former WBC heavyweight champion ‘Bronze Bomber’ Wilder (43-2-1, 42 KOs) because it’s not the reason why people flock in large numbers to see him in action at this stage of his career.

With boring champions like Tyson Fury, with his ugly mauling style of fighting, one can understand why fans prefer to see an entertaining fighter like Wilder. While the ultra-hardcore boxing fans may care about titles, the casuals don’t give a fig. Hence, you’ve got all fans wanting to see Youtube boxers who don’t fight for titles but rather to entertain their many followers.

Deontay = The star of the heavyweight division

After all, this is the entertainment business, and the one-punch knockout artist Deontay has a fan-friendly style, worlds more interesting to watch than Fury’s dreadful punch, grab & lean fighting style.

It doesn’t matter that Wilder doesn’t hold one of the belts because the straps have lost value because of the large number constantly produced by the sanctioning bodies.

Like other superstars like Canelo Alvarez & Floyd Mayweather Jr, Wilder is now beyond titles and no longer needs them to interest the boxing world.

Of course, a large reason is how the four major governing bodies have polluted the weight classes by flooding them with their many titles, which are like fishing nets to bring in sanctioning fees.

When you paper champions left & right in many of the divisions, can you blame fans for losing interest in the belt holders and focusing instead on the fighters that entertain, like Deontay Wilder?

If the fight is to be next and Wilder emerges victorious, a remarkable fourth fight with old foe Fury could be on the cards – provided ‘The Gypsy King’ still holds the title at that time.

Fans don’t care about titles

“They want to see me against everybody,” said Deontay Wilder to ESNEWS. “People don’t come to see me for titles and stuff like that anymore; that’s not for me. People come to see me knock people out. I don’t need to have titles or belts; people come and see me for what I do.

“That’s why you don’t see people booing when there’s nothing going on, because they know it’s coming,” said Wilder.

Let me make this clear. The reason the fans are booing fighters is that they’re so incredibly boring to watch, especially the ugly maulers & the runners.

“What do I always say? You don’t know when it’s coming – but it’s coming. And when it comes, bam, baby! Good night,” said Wilder about his knockouts.
