By Dan Ambrose: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis says he believes the reason Ryan Garcia changed his mind about taking a tune-up fight in January is that he may be “juicing” with PEDS and didn’t want to get caught.
When asked why he suspects that the normally rail-thin Ryan (23-0, 19 KOs) has been using performance-enhancing drugs, Tank said that he looked “bigger” than he usually has over the years.
Ryan chose not to take a tune-up next month against Mercito Gesta on January 28th, which struck Tank Davis as odd, causing him to wonder if his decision was based on him being on something and wanting to avoid detection.
On social media, some boxing fans have commented on the size that Ryan has packed on since his last fight against Javier Fortuna.
Tank’s other theory on why Ryan chose not to take a tune-up is because he wants to stay big until he melts down in April for their fight. Gervonta says he’s heard that Ryan has been drinking a lot, which could be the reason for his weight gain.
In other words, if Ryan were to face Gesta in January, he would need to cut weight for that fight and then do it again for the Tank match in April.
“I think it could be him juicing. That’s why I was pushing for the VADA,” said Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis in a meeting with the media, giving his view on why Ryan Garcia chose not to take a tune-up fight in January.
“It’s either that or he’s not trying to beat his body up to get down to 135 or 140 and just want to stick around his normal weight. Once it’s time to fight me, then drop down [in April]. It’s either that or him juicing.
“He looks bigger than he actually was over the years,” said Tank when asked why he suspects Ryan Garcia has been juicing. “Maybe because he’s been drinking too. I know he’s been drinking a lot. Either that, or he’s been drinking for sure.
“He was slap drunk when he came up to the table,” said Tank Davis talking about a recent incident in which Ryan walked up to his table at a nightclub and appeared inebriated.
