Frank Martin warned by Gervonta Davis he’ll get “hurt bad”

By Sam Volz: Frank ‘The Ghost’ Martin was warned by Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis on Wednesday’s media workout that he’ll be “hurt bad” if they tangle.

Gervonta (27-0, 25 KOs) told the reporters that he’d like to fight the unbeaten Martin, but that he would get “hurt” if it goes down. Martin sparred with Tank Davis in the past, and from what the champion is saying, it didn’t go well for ‘The Ghost.’

Martin (17-0, 12 KOs) is the WBA lightweight mandatory challenger after his win over Michel Rivera in a title eliminator last Saturday night. After the victory, Martin called out WBA secondary 135-lb champion Tank Davis.

With the head of his promoter Errol Spence, the five-year professional Martin has received much attention from boxing fans despite a thin resume in the pro ranks.

Martin will be turning 28 years old on January 21, and it’s clear that he needs to move his career along at a more rapid pace if he wants to capture a world title and make a lot of money during his career.

Errol better watch out. He’ll get his fighter hurt bad like I did before,” said Tank Davis about Frank Martin during Wednesday’s media workout in Miami.

Unless Tank Davis wants to squeeze in a third fight in 2023, Martin will need to wait until at least 2024 before he gets a shot at fighting the unbeaten WBA champion.

There’s nothing wrong with Martin waiting another year to let the Tank Davis fight marinate a little before they fight.

In the meantime, Spence should work at setting up good fights for Martin in 2023 to keep building his popularity because his biggest wins thus far against Michel Rivera and Jackson Marinez aren’t substantial enough to get boxing fans amped about seeing him fight Tank.

Options for Frank Martin in 2023

  • Shakur Stevenson
  • Isaac Cruz
  • William Zepeda
  • Jamaine Ortiz

It’s possible that Martin will need to take fights against top-tier 140-pounders in 2023 if he can’t get any of the well-known 135-pounders to fight him.

“Martin made great adjustments; Rivera was doing the same thing that wasn’t working,” said Akin Reyes to DAZN. “Martin was just a superior fighter.

“I think Martin is going to the next level. He’s ready for whoever. He’s calling out Gervonta Davis; I like that talk of talk. He’s not that young; he’s ready to get to the nitty-gritty and get the big bucks, fighting for the title.”
